Cairns Gateway Resort

Despite the name, Cairns Gateway Resort is not a resort. If you’re booking from overseas (as we did from Canada) expecting a relaxing resort-style stay near the Great Barrier Reef, be aware of this — we felt a bit misled 😅. There is no restaurant, bar, on-site activities, and reception is rarely open, including weekends and the facility is 15 min drive from Cairns with nothing to do in the area they are located. That said, the pool area is genuinely lovely, and the rooms are spacious, functional, and comfortable, with a balcony and basic amenities. Check-in was easy thanks to clear instructions sent in advance. The Wi-Fi barely works, making it difficult to use the internet or contact family, which was surprising given we travelled over a month across Australia and never had this issue elsewhere. While insects are normal in this region, arriving to find dead bugs in the shower, a fan cover left on the floor, and hot/cold taps reversed (which we fixed ourselves) gave the impression that cleaning and maintenance were rushed. There was no room service during our four-night stay, and the property feels more like long-term accommodation than a hotel or resort. The location requires a car, with nothing within walking distance. Overall, the stay was fine, but paying over $500 for four nights felt overpriced compared to similar accommodation across Australia. This review is simply to help future travellers book with realistic expectations.

The room was clean, the gardens, pool, BBQ and grounds were all neat clean n tidy. Good value for money. And only 6 minutes to Cairns CBD.

Really friendly environment, clean rooms, very central location in city and they have an awesome manager and a lovely pool to relax in along with nice pool views
