Samba Rooms Hostel

I was there when the serious lockdown began, with restaurants beginning to close. They were very helpful and would have let me come back to stay with them while I was waiting for a plane back to Europe. On the other hand, for a 62 year old with a dodgy knee and a heavy suitcase the stairs to the front door are difficult, and their only room with a private bath is amply sized and quiet but bare.

I was disappointed by this hostel given the fantastic reviews on the surface. It appears that all of those reviews were from 2014, when the hostel was new and Brazil were hosting the World Cup and reviving a lot of visitors. Since then, there hasn’t been much reason for people to visit Belo Horizonte (I went for the Copa America football) and it seems the hostels have deteriorated since. The kitchen didn’t seem clean and lacked basic utensils. The hostel is on a main road and you can definitely hear it through the wooden shutters and doors. The WiFi was pretty poor, sometimes cutting out for a couple of hours at a time. The bedside electronic wiring also looks very dodgy, and sparks flew out of a plug socket when my adaptor fell out on day as I was plugging it in. The bedside lamps didn’t work either and neither would some of the plug sockets. Breakfast was also a very limited spread (bread rolls, ham, pineapple and full-fat milk). The hostel staff were nice and friendly, although spoke no English at all. The location is good for walking to local parks and the few tourist attractions Belo Horizonte has to offer.
