Pousada Calmaria

The guesthouse is simple, but well cared for, with clean sheets and nice environment. The high point, is the excellent location... is within the port of Barra / Manguinhos, where there are several restaurants, market and a whole infrastructure that makes the stay very easy. I haven’t tried breakfast so I can’t comment on it. Overall, a good choice for those looking for convenience and good location.

Calmaria was our home away from home for almost two weeks. During that time, the hosts welcomed us with open arms, including inviting us to their daughter's birthday party and taking us on a private tour of Buzios. Rooms are quiet/clean, breakfast is good and prices are reasonable. Walking distance to many good restaurants in Porto da Barra and two great beaches - Praia de Manguinos and Praia de Geriba. It's about five minutes outside of town but the Cooper Buzios bus system is easy to use and safe. A+, absolutely recommend.

Very nice place and good value for money. We (married couple m40, f32) just returned from a one week stay and we had a great time. The host and hostess were really helpful and nice and their daughter Laura already took us to see the turtles at the nearby beach when our suitcases were not even unpacked yet. The hostess even made a banana cake just for us to taste (which was really good!). The room was basic but very clean. Clean sheets and towels every day. Only minor point was that our room has only one electricity outlet that we could use and this was in the bathroom. So we had all our electronic equipment (laptop, phone, 2 tablets, 2 camera's) charged all the time in the bathroom. Not an ideal setup. So I would recommend people to bring an extension cable when you bring some equipment you wish to charge. The swimming pool is quite small and the water is cleaned every morning. The breakfast is nice, bread, fresh fruit, ham, cheese, jam, coffee, fresh orange juice. Only thing I missed was eggs. There is a small supermarket just around the corner and some restaurants near the pier. The hotel is not really in the centre of Buzios, but their are small vans that take you for 2 real p.p. (about 0.67 EUR) via the main road to the center or to the Joao Fernandez beach. Most beaches are in walking distance from the main road. The vans are there all the time, you never have to wait for more than 1 minute and they stop anywhere you want them to. To take a taxi from beach to beach is 25 reals, about 8 EUR. We walked in 20-30 min. from the hotel to Geriba beach, Ferradurinha beach, Tartaruga beach and Ferradura beach, and of course Praia de Manguinhos which is around the corner. Please make sure you get a good map, because the street names are not clearly written in many streets and the roads are not straight. It's hard to get directions in any other language than Portuguese. My favorite day: go with the van in the morning to Joao Fernandez beach, stay there to have lunch and walk after lunch to Azeda (and Azedinha) beach which are very beautiful. At the end of the day, walk towards the city center, pass the church and the art in praia dos ossos, have a drink to watch the sunset at one of the nice places (e.g. Mata Hari) and walk to the center to see the statue of Brigitte Bardot. After dinner in the city (if you look for a burger, Mr Brad is an option), take the van back to the hotel.
