Morritts Tortuga Club And Resort

Just returned from a week at Morritt's Tortuga Club celebrating our 40th anniversary. We were given a 1BR unit with a small, but full kitchen and a balcony overlooking one of the pool areas. We had a problem with the door lock that got fixed quickly as we could not enter the unit. We were on the third (top) floor of the unit and there is no elevator. Hauling up the luggage was a little difficult and hot. The resort grounds were well maintained, and the staff were very friendly and helpful. The beach was sandy, but there was a lot of sargassum and sea grass along the shoreline and in the water. At times, the smell was pretty bad, but due to the onshore breeze, it wasn't often. To get in the water, you had to step through a lot of rocks in most areas. Once in, however, the snorkeling was very good, especially around the dock area where there were lots of large and small fish. The infinity pool was the most popular of the three pools and there was always a lively crowd around the swim up bar. Getting chairs wasn't hard, but if you want a shady spot or an umbrella, it was good to get there before 10AM. There were some games and activities at the pools and volleyball on the beach. We ate at all three restaurants - the Cavern Sports Bar, Mimi's Dock Bar, and David's. Mimi's shares the Cavern's kitchen and is the same menu, but you can eat over the water and enjoy the views and the fish around the dock. On Friday we ate at David's. We both ordered the twin spiny lobster tails but we each got three large lobster tails with mashed potatoes, veggies and plantains, for $50US each. We rented snorkel gear from the dive shop - $15US/day and snorkeled around the beach and dock. Pretty good snorkeling. A lot of guests were there for scuba and the resort has its own dive boat. The resort is on the northeast corner of the island, far from the crowds on 7-mile Beach or Georgetown. There were plenty of little, local restaurants and bars along the north coast or down the east and south coasts without having to deal with the city traffic. Roads were good but watch out for crossing wildlife. There are a small Foster's market and a liquor store just down the street which was convenient. There is also an Italian restaurant in the same center. We had to pay a daily resort tax of about $8 and there is an electricity charge based on usage. We cut back the AC during the day and for the week, it was a little less than $100US for a 1BR unit. Overall, it was a lovely, relaxing week at a pleasant resort with good facilities and friendly staff.

We love the quiet of the resort & the friendliness of the staff. Seeing some of the same staff members every year that remember you is something special.

The pools were nice. The rooms were ok. Big cons. Horrible pull out couch for sleeping. The mattress was so thin and the springs were sticking through. Mgmt said this is how all of the couches were. We had to have a topper put on. Still horrible. Mgmt refused to put us in a 2 bedrooom saying elderly people do just fine sleeping on it. You have to pay for your AC. Huge issue. It’s HOT! Very far from seven mile beach. Not alot of restaurants around. The beach is not swimmable. Some loud neighbors. Won’t return.
