Guangzhou Argos Hotel

Just staying in this hotel for one night. The room was clean and new and the stay was comfortable and good for value. The facilities were basic but it's ok for us with a short stay. The breakfast was simple but not too bad. The hotel is not located in the city centre, so don't expect too much from nearby.

the hotel was built recently, so it's still quite nice and clean. However, there is no restaurant, no bar, no pool...nothing! The breakfast is at the end of a long corridor on the 4th floor and is ok, however, the tables had dust on them and there were cockroaches in the napkins. The staff don't speak English, though we were fortunate to find one who spoke a little and he was wonderful getting us taxis and advising is of the fare, however anything beyond that was just not going to happen. We tried to explain we wanted to go to a nice restaurant, after about 10 minutes, he finally understood. Overall, ok to sleep, but nothing else. Oh, the beds are rock hard and the pillows are very sad!

My wife and I went to this hotel because of a Groupon deal that we bought. It was a pleasant surprise to find this excellent hotel in the suburbs of Guangzhou. It takes around 30 minutes to take the metro to Guangzhou city centre. The nearest metro station is Shiqiao (市桥) on Subway Line 3 and the hotel provides free shuttle buses to the metro (5-10 minutes ride) on request. Otherwise, it can be a nice stroll along nearby Jiejin Road (捷进路) to the metro (20-30 minutes walk). There are numerous small eateries along the way on Jiejin Road, including a nice Lohas Cake shop that served cakes, coffee and tea. The main eateries and shopping area can be found nearer the metro along Qiaoxing Avenue (桥兴大道), Dabei Lu (大北路), and Yu Shan Avenue (禺山大道). Shawan ancient town (沙湾古镇) is also easily accessible by public buses (30-40 minutes ride) from the metro area. We took bus 12 from Qiaoxing Avenue (桥兴大道) to get to this beautiful quaint little town. It is said that this town is the birthplace of Cantonese Opera. Service was very good and we were even provided with travel plug adapters as we had forgotten to bring ours. Rooms are spacious and well-furnished. There were some spots that the housekeepers missed, but it was settled easily with a call to Room Service. The breakfast was however quite average and the only blot on this otherwise excellent hotel.
