Howard Johnson Hawana Resort

Nice looking hotel. Check in could have been faster. There is no shuttle as advertised. You need a car here as it's remote. Decent restaurant just off the reception area. Room can do with more little luxuries. A very busy hotel. Can only be for the price. You get what you pay for.

The room is excellent, last time both swimming pool and sauna were closed, so there was nothing else to do. The breakfast isn't that great for occidentals, it's basically only local food and beverages.

I visited this Hotel from 25 -27 Nov 13. I think my expectations of a International 4-star resort were not met, and here is why: TV Channels all in Chinese. Bath tub overflowed when trying to fill as the water nozzle is "too short". (Hard to explain, but ridiculous design) Got charged 500 Chinese yuen on a deposit, for a non-existent mini-bar. Can do nothing 'outside' the resort, so you;re kinda stuck there with nothing to do, especially when the pools etc are not working. All swimming pools were not in working order. I did not see any renovations going on, but only that they were half full and closed-off. I am all for repairs and maintenance (which this resort badly needs) but these details should be made clear to would-be guests BEFORE they do their bookings... The breakfast is FAR from being 4-star. Especially for "westerners". There was nothing really fresh, for example: the bread (only one kind - white) was rather stale,and only one fruit jam to put on...no cheese, or ham to use for bread. So no, if you're a westerner - don't expect a good breakfast here. Some positives: Staff really friendly and helpful. Surroundings are beautiful to walk (river, etc). Verdict: I think for one night on a business trip, this is ok. But that's it. In future, I would rather stay in Guangzhou (1 hour away approx.) and travel to my business site from there each day. Would not recommend for "relaxing resort type of holiday etc". Also IF they fix everything up, and up their breakfast game, this could be ok for a few days of relaxing...
