Guilin Grand Link Hotel

Guilin is a popular tourist destination and deservedly so. River trips take you into unparalleled natural scenery. If you have ever seen a Chinese water painting with its delicate almost ethereal scenes, then sailing along the river in Guilin is like being in the centre of one of these paintings! If you want a truly Chinese experience in Guilin then the Grand Link Hotel will give it to you. The rooms are spacious and the one I had overlooked a winding river with bamboo overhangs - a taste of things to come ! Breakfasts, of course, are Chinese but if you want Western style, there is room for that as well. There are many distinctive features in the hotel including a spacious garden and statues. Service is also very good with every attempt to respond to requests. The hotel is about a 15 minute walk into the centre of the city and there are buses all the time taking people to the river trips that are an absolute must. A great experience in the hotel, in the city and on the river !

Not suited to English only speaking customers. We extreme difficulty communicating with all the staff (front counter, restaurants, room service and hotel manager!!) The rooms are nice and well-appointed with most trimmings, bed is comfortable, shower and bath water were nice and hot. The hotel has five restaurants and café, only two were operating. We dined at both, neither was a nice experience. Staff had very poor English if at all. Regularly pulling out their mobile phones for the translator app. I estimate that only 50% of the items on the menus were available!! Made for a difficult time making a choice. Add to this that people still smoke in restaurants here, even in this hotel, made the experience even more unpleasant. Tried to have a cuppa tea in the room. The drama we had trying to get some fresh milk in the room was beyond belief!! Ending up costing us 4 yen for a tetra pack of milk!! The buffet breakfast was very Chinese, which you would expect, so be prepared for nothing western. Unfortunately, I must confess, we will never stay here again.

the staff is extremely unknowledgeable, unhelpful, and discourteous. Staff often gave me incorrect information (front desk stating the gym closed at a certain time, and hotel guidebook stating the correct information, etc.) Rooms of a 4-star hotel, staff of a 1-star hotel. If the staff was more helpful, friendly, and well-informed, I'd stay here again. I really liked the room I had: I stayed in the executive suite. But since the staff gave me more trouble than help, I'd hesitate to stay here if I were to return to Guilin.
