Zhong Shan

In its day this must have been a top hotel and it still has a lot to offer but I found its hygiene standards too poor to allow me to recommend it. The rooms are ensuite ,with western style toilets, hot water and spacious (2 double but very hard beds) it has the looks and feel of a large but old and dated western hotel. It is within easy walking distance of the city centre shops, parks, lakes rivers etc and tourist attractions. Good noodles bars to the back, a good restaurant on the corner of the block. Bus stops outside. But the hygiene......... the public toilet in the foyer was disgusting, even my Chinese GF refused to use it, the mattress protectors were stained, blood, urine etc and even when taken off and put in the bathroom they weren't changed. the wifi only worked periodically. the "buffet breakfast was dire", no buffet - just some cold noodles and some sort of buns. Had to pay extra to store luggage on day of leaving. The corridors and rooms smelt of smoke, the air con was noisy and ineffective and prostitutes business cards were pushed under the door every day. If you can put up with its failings it does offer a big room that sleeps 4 people at a very cheap price in a central location.

I stayed here about 3 years ago and the room was acceptable. But my recent stay was a nightmare. The hotel has seen its better days which is a pity as it is near the Pedestrian Street and next to the popular Yong Jin restaurant patronised by the locals. The aircon was barely blowing out cool air. The room has a musty smell. The wifi was weak. There are many complaints made on Chinese hotel beds. But mine beats them all. It was HARD. I have slept in many Chinese hotels but this bed really beats them all.

Stayed 3 nights at Zhongshan, Guilin. Location is the only plus pont for this hotel.t would be in better stage years ago, but age had certainly caught up with it. Shopping areas are just 3 minutes walk away. If you are looking for fast food, there's a KFC outlet on the right side (across the road) of hotel when you exit. Breakfast is one of the worst without any variations or choice
