Dazhong Riverside Service Apartment

I never saw a peace of smile on any staff in this hotel but who cares in if you are in China. Language has always been issue for me in hotels in China but I enjoy it these days. I need a clean room and good food which I always got in this hotel. Rest, I didn't bothered much because the property is getting rusty with time. I even heard that there is a garden in this hotel but haven't checked it yet. Good location. Rest is ok.

I'm staying at this hotel since 2007, at each of my stays in Shanghai, which is around 80 days a year. I chose it the first time because there were very few "middle class" hotels in Shanghai. The wooden floor, simple furniture, convenient location, that was really good for a decent price. After 4 years, the hotel is getting old, dirtier, and doesn't bring the same value as it used to. Right now, I'm checking on another hotel for my next trips, because there are recurrent inconveniences in staying in Dazhong: cockroaches in summer, curtains haven't been washed in 4 years and they are oily and they stink, there is an oily smell of breakfast that gets into the rooms in the morning, the laundry tears off some of your clothes once in a while, it's extremely noisy, and the internet is slow on PC, and doesn't work at all on mac. Other hotels in the area have opened, and although it's still hard to find a wooden floor, I'll be checking on better things from now on. Rooms in Dazhong remain good for a traveler that likes having a big and bright space, close to everything, but nothing close to a business comfort.

Very clean, nice bathroom with a great shower. The rooms are large (but the space isn't well thought out - our friend down the hall couldn't see the tv from the bed because it was so far away). There are no wardrobes which means you can't really unpack so the extra space is taken up with luggage. We thought motel 168 (right next door in the same complex) was much better value for money. In particular, and most importantly for our British taste, motel 268 didn't have a kettle (it had a water heater which barely raised the water temperature above tepid) which meant we couldn't make a decent cup of the lovely oolong tea we bought. Motel 168 does supply one. There is free internet access in the lobby and Motel 268 is set away from the main road so it is quiet. The room does not come with breakfast in Motel 268 despite costing more than Motel 168 (which supplies an authentic Chinese breakfast which is delicious) but there is a corner shop across the road.
