Giant View Hotel and Residence

The hotel remains closed although the fabric of the building is still in place - it is now in serious need of maintenance (cleaning, painting etc). Sadly Archie's Bar has also closed - the business had dried up with the hotel's closure. So -- forget this one for a while!

This was my hotel of choice in Shanghai for several years - for the reasons outlined by other reviewers. Reasonable price, good location, quiet, and secure. Unfortunately it seems that the owner had some sort of disagreement with the authorities a year or so ago, and he may be cooling his heels somewhere (guess!) until it is sorted out - meanwhile the hotel is closed. But Archies Bar is sill open, struggling somewhat with the loss of hotel clientele - so if you are in the vicinity drop in and have a drink anyway. Archie the owner is still there, as is his dog, and the friendly atmosphere. Let's open the imbroglio wth the authorities is sorted out soon and the hotel can re-open ! It is physically a good property.

Good, clean business hotel for a reasonable price in Shanghai. Excellent internet access and the sateliteTV has BBC. Clean rooms with lots of space to spread out, including a dining room with large table and kitchenette. The bathrooms are nice with marble showers, but could use a little TLC on cleanliness. Breakfast is not western, but is an okay meal. The bar, Archie's, attached to the hotel is great, has a friendly feel, is extremely accomodating (will give room service to the hotel), and comes complete with bar dog and decent food.
