Hotel Soratama

I have traveled to many parts of Colombia as a foreigner and was very surprised to be charged an additional IVA 19% tax upon check-in even though it was not already included in my booking. They insisted I had to pay it even though I presented my US passport with recent entry stamp as a visitor. I decided to just pay it after arguing with their front desk since they wouldn’t let us check-in and the situation was becoming very uncomfortable. During our stay, we showed them numerous times the exemption law and they would not acknowledge their mistake. This resulted in multiple emails with their general manager and accounting showing them the law until weeks later they finally refunded the erroneous amount to our credit card. Nobody ever reached out to apologize or admit they even made a mistake. It was a decent hotel over all and good location, but for the plumbing issues, mediocre food, and mishandling the fee situation we will never go back.

I have visited the Soratama several times and had always been happy, both for the attention and for the food. That is why I decided to return on April 7, this time accompanied by my husband, with good expectations. When I asked, I consulted the waitress for a recommendation and she suggested the bondiola. I gladly ordered it, but when the dish arrived I was disappointed: the meat came cold inside and, to top it off, the dish did not correspond to what the letter described. It wasn't what I expected. My husband ordered a burger, and the experience was not good either: the meat arrived too overcooked, dry and without the point you expect in that type of dish. It was a night that, in terms of food, definitely did not measure up to the place. However, there is one thing I cannot fail to highlight: Katherine's attention was exceptional. Since we arrived he was watching us at all times, always attentive, friendly and very willing. When he noticed something was wrong, he immediately approached to try to resolve the situation. Their warmth and professionalism made the evening not entirely negative. People like her make a difference in a restaurant. I hope the hotel takes note and improves consistency in its kitchen, because the place has all the potential to offer a complete experience.
