Sokos Hotel Vaakuna Kouvola

From the moment I arrived, the reception staff were incredibly friendly and welcoming, which set the tone for a great stay. My room was comfortable and cozy, exactly what I needed. The breakfast was delicious, and there were two lovely surprises: the licorice from Kouvolan Lakritsi and the pancakes were a real treat! I can warmly and wholeheartedly recommend this hotel. I'll definitely be back.

The original Sokos in the heart of Kouvola right in advance is a great place! Clean, bright, modern, centrally located, parking for an acceptable 9€/night or day, really very nice staff, who sometimes take more time for tips, top! The fitness is state-of-the-art and great, I really liked it. Sauna unfortunately closed already at 10 p.m., which is a shame with the size and could have been quite longer. I only have positive points to report with the exception of 2 small comments, which ultimately support the 4 instead of 5 in the evaluation: 1. The price with 185€/night for an individual near the price I already paid in London, Paris and Brussels in 2025 (+9€ parking have been 194€ for one person, really too much). The hotel was probably totally booked (supply and demand) and the price was so high as a result; 2. As unfortunately already feared due to the occupancy, not only at the late breakfast time on the weekend starting with 07.30 I experienced a scenario like never before anywhere else. I always go as early as possible (if it is 6 also at 6 on holiday) to eat 5 or more courses relaxed for over an hour and was down with a bit of a guilty conscience at 07.28 because I feared exactly that. It was picke pack full, before the actual start time, almost elbow mentality needed... All places occupied, parents could not find room for a child seat etc., 5-6 people queuing by the water. This is so totally unpleasant and has unfortunately made the start of tomorrow bad. The breakfast itself was not very big compared to all the other 4 star hotels I have experienced in the last 10 days, but had everything so far (except honey, I couldn't find it). The breakfast thing should be improved, what's wrong with starting at 7 to equalize it a bit?

When thinking of the Sokos Hotels chain, this hotel is better than average. The hotel's location is very central and there is a spacious parking lot next to it, with reasonable pricing. The staff is really friendly. Hotel room was newly renovated and really cozy. Breakfast quality was good. I did find some cons too: At breakfast some breads (less popular choices?) were dry. There is a plastic mattress cover under the sheets, like in almost every Sokos hotel. They are awful and sweaty, and I always have to take it away and remake the bed. There are two pillows in the bed, a big and small one, but both are equally flat. There is a jacuzzi at the sauna area, which sounds wonderful. The reality is that the jacuzzi is really loud and it ruins the whole sauna relaxation. Also the iWall area is really noisy, it seems there might be a HVAC room or something closeby. All in all, I hate that children's /youth areas are often shoved to some distant and dark corner of the hotel. This wasn't much better, and it's hard to think that an adult would enjoy spending time there.
