I rarely leave negative reviews, but our experience was genuinely unacceptable. When we arrived, the hotel was undergoing extensive renovation work, something that wasn’t made clear beforehand. We were shown to a room that smelt overwhelmingly of fresh paint and chemicals. As someone with asthma, I politely explained that I couldn’t stay in those conditions and asked if we could be moved. The manager initially told us there were no other rooms available. However, after I explained that I have severe asthma, another room suddenly became available. Unfortunately, it was incredibly small, barely large enough to move around comfortably, and it still had the same strong smell of paint and chemicals. After spending the night there, I suffered an asthma attack the following morning, which I believe was triggered by the fumes. I’ve stayed in many hotels over the years and rarely complain, but this was simply not an acceptable environment for guests. Selling rooms that still smell strongly of paint and chemicals, particularly during renovation work, falls well below the standard I would expect. Until the refurbishment is complete and the rooms are genuinely ready for guests, I would strongly recommend staying elsewhere. I’m sure the Manager will respond with “I told you the room was small / we were full”. The fact is both rooms were awful and you shouldn’t be taking money for either.

Extremely noisy. Staff was not helpful with the illegal party just in front of the hotel. Had to call the cops myself. No earplugs provided. Terrible night.

Part of Best Western and going through a refurbishment at the moment so one of our party was moved to another hotel close by; breakfast was buffet style and the cooked varied in quality from morning to morning; room clean shower OK’ish; staff pleasant and helpful; good location next to old port; parking available; would book again – the location offsets the slightly smaller rooms.
