Chateau De La Coutanciere

This is a lovely place to stay while exploring the chateaux and vineyards of the Loire. It is on the edge of the St Nicolas de Bourgeuil appelation with many nearby producers offering tastings. As there are only 8 rooms there is plenty of space in the gardens and in the beautiful heated pool. Breakfast is continental with plenty of choice. The one downside for us was the lack of a restaurant offering a hot meal in the evening. Charcuterie is available as an alternative. There are no restaurants within walking distance. I can understand the difficulty of providing dinner, especially out of season but the offer of a set meal would have been very welcome.

Very friendly family as host (Dutch). Chateau is beautiful and small scale. Hosts ensure that the guests lack nothing. Good base to discover the area in the Loire by car. Villandry is nearby and about 20min drive you are in Saumur where you can eat.

We had a warm welcome from John and his mother and after a stroll around the grounds we enjoyed a welcome drink and a chat with John. We had dinner at the château prepared by John’s mother ( sorry I have forgotten her name) which was first class dining and very enjoyable. Our suite, you wouldn’t call it a room, was wonderful and very comfortable. Overall a very enjoyable experience and our only regret was that we had only booked a one night stay as we were travelling through. We would definitely recommend staying here.
