Chateau de Varenne

The pictures don't do this place justice, it's even more beautiful in reality! The rooms are amazing and the atmosphere is fabulous! The breakfast was amazing, such a nice selection and served outside on the terrace! It felt like being in a fairy tale. Unfortunately this accommodation doesn't have a restaurant, so you have to walk or drive a few minutes to get to places to eat. Otherwise, this was absolutely fantastic. We will be back!

The manor house was originally built in the 17th century, but in the early 20th century it was bought by the Varen family, after whom it is named. Now owned by an Irish family who opened a boutique hotel here in November 2002. There's still 450 years of cedar growing in the garden. The hotel has a swimming pool, a wine bar (self-service), breakfast is served. P.s. I really enjoyed my stay at this boutique hotel!

This place markets itself as a 4 star hotel when it is in fact just a Bed & Breakfast and charges accordingly. Here are are the reasons why this cannot be a 4 star hotel in my opinion and marketed as one: - No elevator - No Restaurant (food options nearby extremely poor) - No staff to help with bags - No grand entrance near hotel so getting bags to the room and up the stairs is a big job - Tiny windows, room felt poky - Tiny TV in the room (30cm) - No shower curtain and no water flow overflow on the bath - Walls are extremely thin - No coffee machine in the room, minimum amount of sockets Overall, you have the feeling you are staying in somebody’s house, you don’t have the feeling you’re in a hotel. We just arrived from a 4 star hotel in lake Maggiore called Villa porta which was the same price (300 euros per night) and you cannot compare the two in any way. The property feels underinvested too. I am very surprised that reviews up until now do not reflect this reality except one on Google review 3 years ago. We feel misled and duped. The quality of this establishment would be acceptable if the price was 150-180 euros per night and if they were honest with potential customers and marketed themselves as a B&B or a “chambre d’hôte”. As it stands, they are one of the most expensive establishments in the region and this is not reflected in the quality of their offering.
