This is an ok hotel. I was very surprised that they did not make up the room from one day to the next. When I asked, they said that there was a card somewhere in the room that said that I had to ask the day before to have the room made up. If they had said this at check-in, I could have said yes. They try to avoid the expense of refreshing the room, by making it my responsibility to look for all of the cards in the room in case I need to make a positive choice. Still, they charge full rates for the rooms. The breakfast is not great. Food goes out at 6:30 and then it looks as though it is never refreshed (including the hot food and the fruit salad). Not very appetizing.

The following review is completely subjective and based on the value for money:
I stayed at the Mercure Hotel Hagen (Wasserloses Tal 4, 58093 Hagen) at the end of May 2026 for a price that was favorable compared to other hotels.
I found the free parking spaces directly at the entrance to the reception to be very positive. At the reception, there was a very quick and completely hassle-free check-in. The receptionist made a very friendly and helpful impression on me. This also applied to all other members of the hotel staff with whom one had to deal.
In the quiet hotel room, we particularly noticed the following positive points:
01. Living/Sleeping area:
There was a kettle with some complimentary tea bags available. Additionally, a bottle of mineral water and 2 pairs of slippers were provided free of charge. At the hotel bar, there was a complimentary drink available. There was also free Wi-Fi with easy access.
02. Bathroom/WC:
The bathroom/WC with a bathtub-shower combination and double sink was very well-maintained and clean.
03. Breakfast:
The breakfast was, in my assessment, completely satisfactory in both quality and quantity, and even exceeded my expectations.
Considering the price-performance ratio, I would rate the hotel stay overall as 'good.'
===========================================
The following things stood out to me, which I believe could be improved, and I have the following suggestions for their resolution:
01. WI-FI
A triple connectivity test with a smartphone app in the hotel room yielded:
- Download 3.29 (0.87; 0.57) Mbit/s
- Upload 1.36 (1.31; 1.82) Mbit/s.
Conclusion: In my opinion, this is no longer up to date and too slow.
02. Bathroom/WC:
With a constantly aging population and thus likely also older hotel guests, a bathtub-shower combination with a correspondingly high entry becomes problematic for mobility-impaired and older individuals. During the next building renovation, the bathtub should be replaced with a level-access, possibly even wheelchair-accessible, pure shower area.
An electric bathroom fan should continue to run in a windowless bathroom even when the light is turned off.
03. Living/Sleeping area:
Rooms facing the sun could perhaps be retrofitted with air conditioning.

Only used the hotel for one night as a business traveler. The location is relatively close to the city and yet with a bit of luck you can find parking on the side of the road without having to use the paid underground parking. The building and the rooms are clearly outdated and you should not expect any special luxury, for me also a little questionable whether it still deserves the four stars. For pure overnight stays - especially on business trips - the hotel is certainly at least good and reasonably priced.
