Hotel Romerbrucke

We stayed here for seven nights during one of the hottest spells in Trier this year. The hotel is in the middle of being refurbished, although we were in one of the refurbished rooms overlooking the Moselle. Unfortunately, the room was exceedingly hot which meant the windows had to be kept open - because of this there is a constant traffic noise and noise from the river path below the windows, and extremely loud sirens every 20 minutes or so day and night from emergency vehicles heading to the nearby hospital. If the room had had air conditioning the windows could have been kept shut and the room better sound proofed. The hotel itself is very nice with a refurbished dining area for breakfast, but unfortunately no catering for the rest of the day - we were not aware of this when we booked. Breakfast was excellent, filling us up for most of the day. We fortunately found a few decent restaurants in the centre of Trier for evening meals. Parking is not at the hotel - it is across the road on what looks like a disused piece of ground with a barrier across the entrance - I was a bit wary leaving my motorcycle in the hotel carpark but fortunately it was ok. There is an area at the hotel entrance for bicycles which could easily accommodate motorcycles as well, but there was scaffolding around the adjacent part of the building - I don't know how keen the hotel is to encourage motorcycle tourists but there is an ideal opportunity for them here. The centre of Trier is within easy walking distance of the hotel so it's an ideal base for exploring the local sites without having to drive. There is probably enough to occupy visitors for five days - we felt we had done most of the sites in this time and so started to venture further afield. There is a good train service from Trier to the likes of The Moselle villages, Koblenz and Luxembourg so again it is a good base.

We found the hotel was well worth it. There is a lovely view of the bridge, the rooms are fine as is the breakfast. The hotel is about 15 minutes walk from the centre but there is a good bus service from the bridge about 200m away.

Everything about this hotel is OK but that is the issue - it is simply “OK”. It isn't outstanding or great value or brilliantly located. It's all fine - but 'just'. Firstly the positives. Breakfast is good with a reasonable choice and lots of juice, coffee, meat, cheese and fruit. The cooked section is a little limited but OK. The breakfast staff are really friendly and attentive and there is a balcony overlooking the river. Great place to start the day if it isn't too hot. Inside is well furnished and has lots of space. The hotel is on the ‘other side’ of the river from the main city attractions so about 15 mins walk into town. The hotel is clean (although there was mould in the shower which was a little basic and outdated). The beds are clean and comfortable. There is parking across the road in a designated car park with a barrier - but during our stay, the barrier was open the entire time so not as secure as it could have been. The less positive. The premises need updating - it isn’t old-fashioned enough to be quirkily ‘classic’. I’ve stayed in similar places which were furnished in the late 70’s and they have a very ‘classic’ feel about them, which give a level of nostalgic charm. This wasn’t the case here. Our room was on the top floor facing the main road. Don’t Book these if you have a choice. We weren’t given a choice on our online booking platform. The ceiling is sloped, which makes getting into the bed, close to the slope, a little difficult. The decorative curtains are attached to the sloped roof with bits of metal bar which means you can’t close them. They are screwed to the wall! This attention to detail is an issue and makes the hotel very much the low end of a 3 star establishment. The Heat The main issue was that it was hot (over 30 degrees during our stay) and the rooms don’t have air-conditioning. This was a real problem. To cool down you need to have the window open all night - the noise from the street was incredible! Trucks and other traffic thundering past. Opposite is a late night pizza takeaway which is VERY popular and people sit outside waiting for their order - which is also loud. Just down the road is a club, which, in this heat, simply spilled out onto the street for late night rivalry. Loud. There was no fan in the room so impossible not to have the window open. The heat isn’t the hotels fault, but they didn’t do anything about the issue - if you were a responsive manager you would go out and buy every cheap fan you could find in the city, put one in each of the top floor rooms, apologise to guests for the inconvenience, provide a fridge with cool drinks or ice and make them feel like something was being done. We didn’t feel like that - the hotel was also fully booked so no chance to change rooms. This was made very clear by the note pinned on the front door - so no point in asking for a change of room. It was the most uncomfortable couple of nights I’ve spent in a hotel. Interest in their guests. When we arrived on Sunday evening the hotel restaurant was closed. We asked if there were places to each and the person on reception was unenthusiastic, telling us we would need to go over the bridge into town. That’s fine but you might hope for an apology for the fact that their restaurant was closed (it wasn't late) and some enthusiastic recommendations of where to eat. We later found that there were incredible restaurants available in the city. When we checked out we weren’t asked how our stay was, if we had found everything OK - Perhaps because they knew the answer and are not a hotel which relies on repeat business. I certainly wouldn’t stay there again - there are other choices in the city for a similar price. So - this hotel is OK if it isn’t hot and you can book a room facing the river. Everything else was just OK but it needs some TLC and staff training to provide a supportive and responsive service.
