AHORN Berghotel Friedrichroda

We enjoyed our stay at the AHORN Berghotel Friedrichroda very much overall. In direct comparison with the AHORN Panorama Hotel Oberhof, we particularly noticed the better organization and the pleasant basic order. The staff was attentive and friendly. The strong focus on families and children is very positive. Some areas, such as the gaming world, still seem very new and really offer many possibilities. The pool area also impressed us. However, the indoor pool, with a water depth of 1.90 m, is only geared toward swimmers and water sports. The spacious and pleasantly quiet grounds are another big plus. Despite the size of the hotel, we also found the dining halls to be comparatively pleasant. Due to the carpet, the noise level was, in our impression, significantly muffled. We were also positively surprised by the food. The selection was decent, it was regularly refilled, and if something was empty, you usually only had to wait a short time. The quality is absolutely fine for a 3-star hotel. We also felt the prices at the hotel were fair. Overall, a good and, above all, very family-friendly package. The combination of the large grounds, swimming pool, gaming world, and other offerings makes the hotel interesting for a stay with children. We would come back.

Better to book without half board. The buffet was bland and tasteless.

We were very upset that there was only one pot of coffee on the ground floor. No coffee machine was available for both breakfast and dinner. There were only drinks vending machines with juices. Two years ago – and apparently still is – there were at least three coffee machines. In addition, on the first floor you had the opportunity to have fresh fried eggs prepared by the chef as desired. On the ground floor, however, this was not possible and was not tolerated by the reception. You almost felt like a little criminal trying to get an egg upstairs. Dinner was also particularly disappointing. The food was transported from the kitchen on the first floor to the ground floor. The warming containers apparently did not work properly, so the food was only lukewarm or even cold at the start of dinner. This did not bring out the flavors, and the food tasted correspondingly bland. We had booked half board, so breakfast and dinner. My husband (70 years) and I (65/66 years) were very much looking forward to this trip. Three years ago, you had the opportunity to get freshly prepared fried eggs from the chef right in front of your eyes on the first floor. This was much more pleasant and better quality. In addition, I unfortunately had the impression that mostly older guests were accommodated on the ground floor – possibly assuming that they complain less or rather accept the situation. We were particularly disappointed by this impression, as we want to feel treated equally as guests regardless of age. Overall, we were very disappointed this time.
