Hotel Lo Stambecco

With a couple of improvements, it would give 4-star hotels a run for their money. Very kind, very polite, and helpful staff. We stayed for three nights in two double rooms. The location is spectacular, certainly even more so in winter. Varied and abundant breakfast, but you shouldn't go after eight o'clock otherwise it gets scarce, just like dinner, everything very good and with choices, too bad about the buffet appetizers and desserts where unfortunately sometimes there are people who don't know how to control themselves (e.g., 6 slices of cake when there are three of you at the table... just no). So you risk not finding some dishes at the appetizer and dessert stations, and we didn't go down late for breakfast or dinner. The 6 PM aperitif is spectacular. Probably the biggest flaw is the cleanliness, that little bit of extra attention would be enough.

I was supposed to stay at this hotel for one night. Unfortunately, during the evening, after a day of trekking, I started to feel suddenly unwell. Around 7:00 PM, I went to the reception to ask for information on what to do in case it was necessary to go down to the valley for an emergency. I was assured that the service was available and I was provided with the phone number of the person in charge of driving the pick-up. Unfortunately, around midnight, my condition worsened and I tried repeatedly to contact the number that I had been provided. I never received an answer: only the voicemail started. At that point, we contacted 112. Considering the bad weather and the rain, it was explained to us that the helicopter could not intervene and we were asked if there was anyone from the hotel available to accompany me down to the valley. My boyfriend then went down to the reception, finding it completely deserted, with no staff members present. The only person encountered was a hotel guest, a friend of one of the receptionists, who tried in turn to contact her without success. In the end, I had to wait an hour before 112 managed to organize a response with a Guardia di Finanza jeep, which came to pick me up to allow me to reach the rescue team. I understand that unforeseen events can occur, but I consider it extremely serious that in an isolated facility, reachable only by ski lifts, the availability of an emergency service is guaranteed which, in the moment of need, proved to be completely unreachable. Even more serious is the total absence of staff at the reception during the night, precisely when it may be necessary to manage urgent situations. Fortunately, my situation did not have serious consequences, but an organization of this type, in a facility located at high altitude, represents a serious safety problem. I hope that the hotel reviews its procedures so that no other guest has to find themselves in a similar situation. I will never go back there.
