I stayed with my family at this four-star hotel in Vieste. From the moment of arrival, it is clear how much the property has remained stuck in the eighties: phones fixed to the walls, doors with classic round handles complete with knobs, retro curtains, and decidedly dated furnishings. It is not a neglected property, but it is certainly in need of a major modernization.
The room was not particularly spacious and the mattress proved to be terribly uncomfortable: sagging and with the springs clearly perceptible on the back. The bathroom also needs more care. The towels were stiff, worn by time, and assorted randomly every day, with different models.
The air conditioning unit was so noisy that it could not be used during the night. The soundproofing between the rooms was also terrible: one evening I was forced to call the front desk because of a loud noise coming from the room next door. The porter had to knock on the other guests' door to ask them to turn off the bathroom fan, which had been left on. An episode that gives a good idea of the quality of the soundproofing.
The minibar was completely empty, without even a complimentary bottle of water. From a property classified as four stars, one would be right to expect something more.
The only truly positive aspect of the room was the cleaning service: the rooms appear clean and the staff were always friendly, helpful, and kind.
The breakfast also turned out to be very basic, with numerous packaged products and fruit that was not always very fresh. It was not possible to toast or heat up bread and the organization of the dining room seemed rather confused: we often had to go looking for cutlery or ask the staff for it directly. Coffee and cappuccino, which were of very modest quality anyway, were dispensed by automatic machines: a solution accepted in Europe, but in Italy, and especially in a four-star hotel, I believe one can and should offer a better service.
The pools and surrounding areas are a saving grace, clean and well-maintained, with new lounge chairs and umbrellas by the pool.
Considering the eighties atmosphere, I hoped until the very end that the bill would also be expressed in lire. Unfortunately, that was not the case: the price is perfectly in line with current times, but the property definitely is not.
