Plaza Hotel Comfort

The Plaza is perfectly located 50m from the Villa San Giovanni train station and is clean and comfortable with 24hour reception, good breakfast (including fruit and yoghurt and wifi in rooms. Very helpful and friendly staff, nice view across the Strait of Messina to Sicily - lovely sunsets seen from our balcony. Restaurant no longer operating but some good little trattorias nearby. 8 minutes by train to the little beach village of Scilla

We were traveling from Amantea to Ragusa. To break up the long drive, we stayed at the Plaza Hotel for night. In just a few hours we were fortunate to experience a wonderful stay. Giuseppe and Rosario made us feel welcomed and saw to our every need. We had a wonderful room with lovely furnishings, great bathroom and beautifully designed closet. For dinner, Giuseppe arranged for a table at their sister hotel, DeVille, a short walk away. We were warmly greeted by Daniele and had a incredible dinner. Our waiter, Francesco began our meal with local cheeses paired with different marmalatas. The rest of the dinner, as well as the wine, was delicious. What a pleasant surprise to spend such a wonderful night.

This is a hotel with delusions of grandeur in a down at heel area next to the ferry port and railway station. The fact that the location is handy for travellers is the only reason for staying - but this point is lost on the manager / reception chap who looked down his nose at us as soon as we set foot in his posh establishment. He would obviously have preferred to be running somewhere simply marvellous in Milan or Rome with a rich designer clad clientele - what he got was us... touring adventurers. And he made his contempt very obvious. Several times during interactions with the aforementioned manager i attempted to lighten the frosty atmosphere but he was the man who refused to smile. What a snob!
