I spent three nights at this hotel during August, although not consecutively. Each stay involved a late arrival and an early departure. A standard guest room was booked at roughly EUR 220 per stay.
The hotel is conveniently located, more or less. It is about a ten-minute walk from the airport terminal.
The welcome and reception experience is very Italian. One could describe it as direct and matter-of-fact, but to be honest, it often comes across as plain rude. Everyone seems to be a manager of some sort, nobody can actually do anything, and most staff appear to have an attitude.
During all three stays I received a room upgrade, which was of course appreciated. However, it was essentially the same room on a higher floor, with access to the Executive Lounge. The lounge was already closed by the time I arrived, and lounge access is included with my membership anyway. On my third stay, I had to request the upgrade myself, as I had apparently been incorrectly listed as either a Hilton Member or Blue member, according to the receptionist. Having to ask for benefits that should be recognised automatically is never a great experience.
On both my first and second stays, no payment authorisation was placed on my card at check-in, which meant I could not charge anything to my room, including bar or room service purchases. That is particularly frustrating after a late arrival in the Eternal City.
Sleep quality is not great at this hotel. The beds are lovely, but noise from nearby trains and traffic is disruptive, not to mention noise from other guests.
The fitness centre is acceptable, although there are no staff present in the evenings, so be prepared to wait for towels. Also expect screaming children, as the pool is located in the same area, making the entire fitness and wellness section far from tranquil. The sauna facilities are quite poor. The steam room smelled of mould, and while infrared saunas may be fashionable, they are not really what most travellers are looking for after a long day. The hotel also advertises that the saunas are open until 10 p.m., but the infrared sauna shuts down 10–15 minutes earlier. Perfectly understandable, perhaps, but still frustrating when time is limited.
Finally, a message to management: if you genuinely want Diamond members to feel recognised and valued, do not ignore them at check-in and then hand them an unsigned, printed note thanking them for their loyalty. Many other Hilton properties do this far better, including airport hotels. May I suggest a visit to Hilton Helsinki Airport, Hilton Amsterdam Airport, or even Hilton Frankfurt Airport and Hilton Munich Airport? They understand that it is the small things that matter when it comes to retaining your most loyal customers. In the end, a smile goes a long way. Perhaps also a “Yes, but…”, “Yes, and…”, or “Let me see what I can do” instead of a simple “No”.
