Romantik Hotel Cappella

Wonderful family friendly 5 star hotel. The family suite at Hotel Cappella was perfect. It has a loft for our three kids with its own bathroom, a dining area, and a room for the parents. The pool and hot tub with those views was a major highlight. The half board food was worth the upgrade and excellent. We would definitely recommend this hotel.

We arrive on Friday and find the seafood dinner. We are welcomed by an incredible buffet, not only with the classic vegetables and fruit but also fish and a parade of desserts worthy of a pastry shop. Then there is a waiter who prepares small trays with grouper and caviar, and we already start not believing our eyes and continue with lobster linguine, with half a lobster for each plate, a baked sea bass with potatoes and a delicious à la carte dessert in addition to those at the buffet. A truly incredible dinner that we had never, in so many years, found in a mountain hotel and that could easily compete, with excellent chances of winning, with a luxury restaurant by the sea. The following day was the gala dinner and we arrived full of expectations; if the fish dinner, the weak point of every hotel in the Dolomites, had been so stratospheric, let alone the gala one. Do you know what the buffet was like instead? Well, empty, absolute zero, not even a leaf of lettuce or an apple. Just a very sad little bread corner. At first I thought of a fire in the kitchens, but instead it seems everything was normal. Okay, they will recover with the à la carte menu, we thought. Instead, the worst was yet to come. The appetizer is a mix of pork, beef, fish and quail egg, all piled in the center of the plate, without a logical thread or at least a harmony of flavors. Wanting to give a meaningful name to the dish, I would have called it “Oops, I dropped some things in the pan.” One of the most insipid dishes I have ever eaten. It then continues with a consommé with soggy bread inside, over which I draw a veil of pity, and with three ravioli, excellent, the only dish up to par. For the main course, a tough, overcooked filet covered in a kind of “hay” that compromised its flavor, and finally a vaguely chocolate dessert so hard that you had to hack at it several times with a spoon to break off a piece. How to judge the cuisine of a hotel where if I arrive on the right night I have a pharaonic buffet and the next night nothing? One night the sublime and the next the mediocre? One night dishes from a starred restaurant and the next from a deli? The hotel in general is an excellent hotel, but one must consider that the room prices are a good 20-30% higher than the average for a 5-star hotel in Trentino-Alto Adige and, even without considering the gastronomy-roulette, we did not find anything that could justify such a high price.
