Stay at Hotel Castell Rundegg, Merano From the outside and in the public areas, the Castell Rundegg makes a wonderful impression. The historic building exudes charm, the dining and lounge area is stylishly furnished, and the pool also invites you to linger. The disappointment upon entering the room was all the greater. A beige synthetic carpet that smelled as if it had just been treated with a generous portion of chemicals, tasteless furnishings with the ambiance of a basement room, and as a small detail, a broken toilet seat – that did not fit the rest of the hotel's appearance at all. Dinner continued in a similar fashion. Apparently, something had gone wrong with my registration. The lamb dish I had been looking forward to was already sold out. The only alternative left was a Wiener schnitzel. The salad buffet was decent, although the tomato-mozzarella salad was also already gone. With the salad, I deliberately ordered a white wine and explicitly explained to the service to wait with the main course so that I could order a red wine afterwards. This request was simply ignored. Shortly thereafter, the schnitzel was already on the table. The presentation was more reminiscent of an average country tavern than an establishment that advertises Gault-Millau ambitions on its website: a veal schnitzel, oven-roasted vegetables generously soaked in olive oil, a few mushy potato pieces – and as a culinary highlight, a bay leaf for decoration. I could also forget about the planned red wine, because there was simply no opportunity left to place an order. Perhaps I just happened to catch an unfortunate evening. However, anyone who treats themselves to a hotel that advertises upscale gastronomy for a special occasion expects more than an experience along the lines of: Tough luck. The redeeming conclusion was at least breakfast in the garden – a beautiful ambiance and a rich, decent buffet. It is a pity that this positive impression could not make up for the rest of the stay.

In just a few minutes by car, you arrive at the valley station of the Merano 2000 cable car. The rooms are spacious and comfortable, equipped with all amenities, in a classic style. The outdoor pool and garden, as well as the architecture and style of the castle both inside and out, are truly the highlights of this beautiful establishment.
