We have found the hotel thru a google search, we were looking for a cheap place to stay for the night before continuing on our trip. Though the reception staff does not speak English but they did try their best to make us feel welcome. They have recently renovated the rooms, in fact our room looked brand new. The first time the lady showed us the room I wasn't sure if we had to take off our shoes (it looked a bit too clean to just walk right in) but she managed to tell us that it's OK to keep the shoes on. There are many bars and snacks in the area, on a quick count I saw at least 70 within a walking distance, so you definitively got choices for the night. They offered a free breakfast served in the room. Although it was only a couple of toast with jelly butter, honey and coffee and cream, for less than 4000 Yen it's hard to beat if you are on a tight budget, and it does make you feel good to be served breakfast with real china right in the room. Too bad we were only passing by, but if we return to Shirakawa I'll make sure to stop by again.
