I chose Furukawa as the cityscape after Takayama for my Kanazawa-Shirakawa-go-Hida sightseeing trip in the hope of a free period after the May holidays. The building and surrounding atmosphere of the inn had the calm old quaintness as expected, and the room was a stone forest with a light moon tower, with a tea room. From the window, a large and splendid temple that looks large in front of the room facing the river is a borrowed view, which further enhanced the travel experience. After I returned home, I learned online that the temple had been rebuilt after it was destroyed by the Great Fire of the Meiji period, and that there had been great support from the silk mills in Okaya where the craftsmen worked, in addition to local people such as parishioners. The banks of the river are lined with Tamaguri stones of the same size and are very beautiful. The food is served by Naoki Akita, a chef in his 40s who has won numerous awards and is said to be famous in his field, so it looks and tastes delicious, and the dishes are carefully selected. There is only a ryokan with a history of flowing stones. At dinner, the landlady of the Yatsumi-yakata gave us a greeting about the history of the inn, which dates back to the Edo period, and also told us that it had served as a gathering place for craftsmen of Nomugi-toge Mountain Pass and was used for film location. We decided to change the route back to Ibaraki Prefecture (along the old road, which GoogleMap does not route) to go through Nomugi-toge Mountain Pass in remembrance of the harsh mid-teens winter snowfall that the craftsmen were still in.

Quiet, serene and the people there are so nice. They were doing some renovation at the property but was really unnoticeable. The property itself was very nice. The food featuring Hida beef was superb. The property is located a short 7 minute walk from hida furukawa station and even though they have a shuttle we walked there everyday. We also visited Watanabe sake brewery nearby (5 minute) walk and if your into sake i would definitely go (they have free sampling). Shout out to the ookami-San who visited us during our dinner and took a picture of us and left us a copy at breakfast the next day. Super nice, funny lady. Also to Kanako, who spoke perfect English and helped make our reservation.

It was my most exquisite stay in Japan! Everything was perfect. If you want to experience authentic Japanese hospitality and historic Ryokan, this is the place to do it. The town of Hida is fantastic too.
