What a total DISASTER this place turned out to be. I can’t begin to describe how far this is from what (paid) hospitality this is. Now, I have never been to North Korea but holidaying here must not be far from it. All day long you are told what you can’t have or where you can’t go. I.e. we spend a few hours in (what they call) a pool at an additional cost of 35USD for three hours where I ordered drinks for over 100 USD. As they offered no snacks or food I crabbed a pre packaged cookie from my bag. Before taking the first byte the staff ran over to scream at me : NO EATING!! They charge for all you want to use without letting you know. The check in procedure was a mess and took ages. The staff is (trained to be) rude, the rooms are run down and they still pride themselves to host a G7 a century away from today’s reality. In 25 years of spending 100 nights away from home this is the biggest rip off of all times. I challenge and encourage the group CEO of the place to holiday his family anonymously here. See how he like the place then…. What kind of show are you running here.

Hotel looks nice on the surface - lobby is beautiful, but the rooms are tiny and while clean are tired and need an update. I don’t imagine that the G7 leaders stayed in rooms like ours. Breakfast was included in our room rate - we were glad of this as it was average at best I would not have wanted to pay much for it! The third bed for our daughter was not a proper bed and it’s a good job she’s not taller as she only just fit on it and the bedding (sheet) didn’t cover it properly. The aircon in the room clearly wasn’t adequate as a portable aircon unit was placed in the room befor we arrived. While it was nice to have it took up room and was very loud. Very surprised that use of the pool and gym were only available for an extra charge in all my years of global travel I have never had to pay to use hotel facilities in this way The hotel is a long way from the city centre but very convenient for the ferry to miyajima island. Staff were extremely helpful.

The location of this hotel was an enormous shock: it is in the port area, away from any shops or services. On our original itinerary, Travelbag had booked us into the Sheraton Hotel near the railway station, ideal for two people in their seventies travelling by train to different destinations in Japan. Distressingly, the agent failed to draw our attention to this total relocation which made the additional travel more expensive and time consuming. There is a ferry service directly from the hotel to Miyajima, so that can be a bonus. However, for us it incurred another cost (£40 return) because it’s separate from the JR Rail Card that we had bought. The first room we were allocated was rather small and jaded, but after a lengthy discussion with hotel staff, Mr Okino Tetsuya kindly offered a similarly sized room that had been refurbished 2 years ago. The hotel reception is lovely and has a beautiful water feature with a model of the Shinto shrine at its centre. We didn’t eat there at all, having eaten at the Nadaman restaurant in their sister hotel in Hakone where the food was okay but more expensive than comparable food elsewhere. Although buffet breakfasts are served, these had not been booked as part of our package, so we tended to eat at local restaurants whilst exploring. This is definitely a hotel for those travellers who like to be away from it all.
