Check-in and check-out was very friendly, as was the shuttle bus service from the station. That was the best, but this hotel is aging and did not feel clean. The rooms and everywhere felt old and used up and smoked-up. The restaurant had strange service, forgetful, stressed and borderline not so friendly which not what I expect in Japan. The food was average at best. Breakfast buffet was jammed packed and lacked variety of food.
The onsen is not good. The hotel advertises 22 different baths, but reality is different. Actually the men and women rotate the use and in most cases the men had the very crappy "half" the two nights I was there. Not impressed at all with this system, either the men will be unhappy or the women will be unhappy.
Hotel is family friendly for sure, but not worth it. Needs to be broken down and rebuilt. However the property is nice, right on the lakeside.

Evening fireworks over the lake and lots of baths to choose from made this a very-good hotel for me and my nephew, but I think women (such as my wife...) would have a bit of a different impression. The onsen baths are set on the men/women switching system, such that men have access to the larger complex of 15 baths from 2pm-8pm, women have access from 20:30pm-1am, and then men access again in the morning from 5am-10am. As such, after check-in, my nephew and I had great fun going from bath to bath, but my wife felt the choices a bit limited. The hotel felt a little worn around the edges, but was probably more reasonable in price than other choices. It wasn't season for the famous local crab, but we did have steamed live abalone which was very tender and tasty. Beautiful view across Lake Shibayama.
