The amenities were good and clean. There are restaurants nearby, so it's easy to use. It's nice that you can go to a restaurant within walking distance.

Stayed here for two nights. A smoking room was assigned but I did not change room as all are acceptable. I arrived the hotel and left my backpacker at reception in the early morning and got a check-in after finishing my day hike at Kirishima. The hotel is located closed (around 10 mins walk) to JR station where you can get a day pass to Kirishima. And, I took off bus at the second last stop where is next to a park and under a bridge. Then, it just took 5 mins walk back to hotel. I also take airport bus at this stop. The room is big with a windows. It is clean and the room rate is reasonable. Staff is very nice. There are no rubbish bins inside, one for combustible and non-combustible. I suggest some examples could be provided for distinguishing two types of rubbish as we all understand the importance of saving the environment. Free bike is offered which is a bonus to me. I explored Kokubu with well-functioned city bike all the time and found out a farmer market nearby. Also, i cycled to the city nearby. Airport bus schedule is provided at reception. It takes around 30 mins to the airport.

Kokubu is a convenient place to stop for a night before heading up to Kirishima mountains. Otherwise, you can basically skip Kokubu all together as there is not much to see here. Around the station and near the hotel you will find a lot of government buildings which have no character. However, if you do make a stop here, the hotel is a short 5 min walk away from the station. Don't expect much from this business hotel, it's clean, just like many Japanese hotels and that's just about it. The biggest highlight of our stopover is however an Italian restaurant we have discovered over the internet, called Trattoria da Shin which serves refined and modern (or is it fusion?) Italian cuisine put together by a passionate Japanese chef. He serves only two or three tables at a time so make sure you write to him and make your reservation. The restaurant requires a 30-min walk from the hotel.
