On arrival at Hakone train station, we popped into tourist information & they rang the hotel which sent their minibus to collect us. A 10 minute downhill walk to the town (walk back not too strenuous) with views over the valley. Friendly welcoming staff & incredible traditional ryokan room. Lift access to all floors. Comfortable, clean room with no shoes allowed. Welcome tea chest & mochi, water jug & a/c & fridge. Yakata provided for wearing around the hotel. Large separate bathroom & toilet. “Balcony” area with screen door & sitting area. The dinner was incredible - we enjoyed the vast array of traditional, superb quality dishes & embraced the experience. We weren’t always sure how to eat each dish or what delights awaited but to have this completely immersive experience was a real delight. The private onsen was superb, overlooking the town under starlight with a slight drizzle in the air. Breakfast was another gourmet experience but too much for us after such a feast the previous night. The wonderful staff offered us a western breakfast for the next morning. The second night evening menu was equally astonishing, allowing us to try things we’d never have chosen. If you’re open to trying new cuisine, you will be amazed! Western breakfast was served with the same care & attention, beautifully presented & plentiful. We had an issue with the toilet, which was quickly resolved by the reception staff. Evening bar available with wide range of drinks, chargeable to room. We sat in the a/c library & also outside - close to nature! Behind the hotel is a path to a shrine up steps & a memorial.

Very bad experience. Food was very bad, big kitchen and very bad taste. There were few places to drink or had only one of each kind. Private onsen was very dirty. When we asked about activities we only got information about ‘the Lake’. Definitely not recommended.
