Kyoto Machiya Guesthouse Sanjojuku

This place was recommended by my family who live in Japan. The situation is very convenient : the Guesthouse is near point of interests or buses or metro station. Inside, this a traditional Guest house with a lot of simplicity and very charming settled. My room is clean, with few equipments (table, futon, mirror and a set of towels) When I booked this guesthouse I was looking for simplicity and quiet place. This is why I came for and I'm not disappointed. The best part is the guesthouse staff, very kind. They help you when you need advises, suggest you some good things to see and can help you to understand japanese culture. I will keep a good memory of my stay in Kyoto thanks to them.

The guest house is an old machiya house 5 minutes away from the Nijo Castle. The location is very convenient for visiting Kyoto. If you hold a Japan Rail Pass you can get for free to the Nijo Station using the Hashidate or Sanin lines. From there there is a 10-minute walk to the guest house. We stayed on one of the upper rooms in August. We had to struggle a bit getting our bags upstairs though a very steep staircase. It was extremely hot and humid, especially on the upper floor. Luckily there was an AC unit in each room, otherwise it would have been unbearable. The shower, toilet, and other facilities are shared with the rest of the guests and staff, but they were very clean. There is also a shared microwave, fridge and water boiler. The staff was very friendly and helpful. As a downside I would say that the owner should spend some money in maintaining the house, e.g., the AC was very noisy probably because the filters have never been cleaned, and there were some stains and holes on the doors and floor. I would recommend you staying in this guest house if you want to live a traditional experience and do not mind sacrificing some hotel luxuries.

This guest house is an antique machiya in city center. It has only 4 rooms, 2 upstairs and 2 downstairs. All room use futons, and provided AC. The guest house are very clean, quiet, especially when you sat at common room at the morning as drinjing japanese tea and enjoying the street of kyoto's neighborhood. The staff speak english nicely, very friendly and helpful. This guest house very near with sanjo dori, a place full of cafe,store,bakery ,market on walking distance about 3 mins. And the guesthouse near with bus stop, about 2 mins walking. The nijo castle also in 10 mins walk The room has very simple interior, only one room has a garden view. The shared bathroom are very clean and comfortable. This guesthouse also provide a pantry that allow the guest to use microwave,fridge, and water heater. This guest house are very unique and the guest are able yo experiencing old machiya archihtecture.
