We stayed at the Kitanoya whilst travelling in Japan. It was definitely a treat as it was much more expensive than anywhere else we stayed. We booked a private onsen room and were given one in the So-Sui annex. This was the scandi-looking block the other side of the rail tracks from the main hotel. It wasn't really a room, more like a 2 story town house with a kitchen, garden, two huge beds, living area and an outdoor onsen overlooking the sea. So why the 3 stars? Despite its cool feel, it actually wasn't that nice to stay in. The huge panoramic window had an ill-fitting blind so we were woken by the light at 5am. The walls were paper thin so we could hear every movement of the guests next door. The lights were computerised but very hard to figure out. They had a full size emergency exit sign brightly illuminated right by the bed (which we fixed by taping a brochure over it) There were tea and coffee supplies which they didn't replenish. Final gripe which you may not realise is that although the pictures do show it being next to the sea, they don't show the massive car park in between the room and the sea so for privacy you have to keep the blinds fully shut most of the time. Other than that, we enjoyed our trip! We had pre-booked the 10 course tasting menu which was superb, but very expensive by local standards so for other meals we walked into town (7 mins) and used the wide range of eateries there. Would I recommend this place? Yes, I think so.

We booked this hotel on the run because of a less than happy experience in Ine. This hotel is relatively easy to find and has good views of the water. The train line runs past and trains can be heard from the rooms, although this wasn’t a noisy problem. We wanted to eat at the hotel but the rule here that you need to book all meals 48 hours in advance (tricky when you only booked the day before). However a lovely staff member suggested a wonderful local restaurant only 10 minutes drive away, which proved to be a winner!

I stayed with my family. The toilets, washrooms and showers in the hot spring washrooms in the guest rooms were not available from night to morning, which was very inconvenient for hygiene despite the hot spring inn. The staff responded only with a verbal apology, with no concrete alternative, and washed their faces and hands with the drinking water they had bought. Despite the high cost of accommodation, I felt very sorry for the dishonesty of troubleshooting. I don't think you should expect to respond to equipment problems.
