I would like to give a special thank you to the staff at Sumiya Ryokan, especially Mayuko who was responsible for my now fiancee and I only having amazing things to say about our stay earlier this month. The only thing I can provide as feedback is that the booking system for the hotel and the 3rd party sites could use some work as far as transparency on the room types, look and feel. It is very hard to see and understand what room exactly you are booking, especially for someone who is new to Ryokan style lodging. Besides that our room was very spacious and comfortable but we were looking for the true experience of staying in a Ryokan and sleeping as close to the floor/tatame as possible so we were changed rooms to one where that could be accomodated. We know that we were lucky that there was availability for that to happen and we appreciate the staff making it happen for us as we got engaged in Kyoto and it especially now has a special place in our hearts. For the room, I loved the bathtub which is a true authentic wooden Japanese style bathtub. I would recommend this place to everyone and anyone who is looking for Japanese style lodging and who really value amazing service from the staff who clearly take a lot of pride in their jobs and the establishment. Thanks again Mayuko and team! We will be seeing you in some near future. Arigato gozaimasu.

This place cast a spell on us! The first night was a little strange because the feel of the ryokan and the interactions with staff feel so different than what we are used to (even after several days in the country already). But the warmth of the staff - their deep care for the ryokan and everyone staying in it - warmed us up too and by the second day we didn’t want to leave! This place is very special and I can’t recommend it enough. Hot baths, daily newspaper, greetings coming and going. We loved our daily breakfast. And don’t miss out on the kaiseki dinner. We did it our last night in Japan and it was so incredible. So much food prepared and served with so much artistry.

My family used it in November. Right after you get in, you're on the lower leg? By the time I removed my shoes and changed them into slippers, Mr. Nakai and his landlady greeted me. The room was called Ryuseki Traditional Ryokan and was designed to give you a sense of the wabi-sabi of Japan. Each room seemed to have its own theme, and I wanted to stay in another room next time. The toilets and watering area were new and seemed to be comfortable for young and old alike! The kaiseki cuisine was delicious, and the food made with Kyoto miso, which makes you feel like you came to Kyoto, was very delicious! It was a recommended inn not only for overseas people but also for Japanese people! I would like to go there again!
