Visited in March 2026 as a weekend escape. Stayed in the North Wing's 2nd-floor premium room with an in-room hot spring view bath — a design that delivers exactly what it promises. The North Wing offers two hot spring experiences under one stay. The in-room Shiozawa Onsen (a saline spring with excellent heat-retention properties) fills a deep soaking tub positioned against a large window overlooking the winter forest. After dark, with lighting dimmed, the scene edges into something genuinely contemplative. The communal bath in the Main Wing draws from a separate source — Kose Onsen, an alkaline sodium bicarbonate spring — requiring a short outdoor walk, which on a cold March night calls for street clothes rather than yukata. That minor friction aside, the contrast between the two springs is a quiet pleasure that rewards North Wing guests specifically. The cocktail hour, held in a dedicated lounge section within the "Grill & Dining G" restaurant, runs from 17:00 for Platinum Elite members and above. The food selection — small plates, cheese, pâté, salads — is intentionally restrained, with the option to order full restaurant menu items at an additional charge, a practical arrangement that prevents the lounge from feeling incomplete. What distinguishes this lounge from others in the Marriott portfolio is the drinks. Draft sparkling wine and beer on tap are complemented by bottles from Izutsu Wine and Musee du Vin, regional sake, shochu, and whisky — a lineup with a depth of local identity rarely seen in city hotel lounges. The natural sequence — long soak in the communal bath, brief walk back, cold glass of sparkling at the lounge — is as close to a perfect evening structure as this kind of property allows. Breakfast at "Grill & Dining G" (complimentary for Platinum Elite, two guests) featured bread from Boulanger Asanoya, the long-established local bakery synonymous with Karuizawa. The croissant in particular held up to scrutiny. Summary: A property that works through rhythm rather than spectacle — the interplay between the two springs, the lounge, and the rooms creates a coherent and satisfying whole. Shinshu's terroir comes through in the glass, which is the right kind of differentiation for a regional resort. I was very happy to have you upgrade to a room with a hot spring. This was our first time in the North Wing, as we had only stayed in the main building, and it was great! The hot springs are in your room, so you can take a hot spring in the morning, and it's nice not to worry about the crowdedness of the baths. It was nice to celebrate my sister's birthday at Karuizawa Marriott again this year.

Excellent stay, not sure why this hotel isn’t higher rated here. Shuttle bus provided to the train station, though not as frequent as I would have liked, it never got crowded. The drivers were immensely helpful. All staff were extremely helpful too - never felt like anything was too much of a hassle. I need to comment though that not all staff were very proficient at English, but even those who weren’t really tried to communicate - and even literally running to find another staff to help for more complicated requests. That commitment to a great experience was exemplary. Only drawback was that the exec lounge was limited - but honestly I cannot complain about it. I would consider this to be more of a resort than a city hotel, and you don’t even get anything similar at other resorts. Would definitely stay again!
