Onsen Hotel Omoto

This was our favourite hotel of our 1.5 weeks in Japan this time, even following our lovely stay at Kamikochi. After a couple of days hiking, it was lovely to relax in a comfortable bed, quiet room, and onsen with views across to the alps. Sitting on the edge of town, taxi was the easiest way to get there with our bags. We used the bus during the day, and the hotel shuttle dropped us off at the end of our stay. Food options at the hotel are limited, though the delivered breakfast was perfectly filling. Boards were prepared with the local food options nearby - many showcasing the fresh local produce. As a runner, this hotel has some amazing country paths nearby, following the river upstream through rice fields and small farms. The hotel was fairly quiet while we were there, which made for a very peaceful and attentive stay. Would recommend upgrading to the higher rooms, as the views are impressive. Looking for something different? A real Japanese experience? Then go to Hotel Omoto in Matsumoto. Located a bit out of town (15 minute taxi drive - there is bus service but limited) this Ryokan has great personal service in typical immaculate Japanese style rooms. (which also means no chairs and sleeping on tatami floor with mattresses) There are hot baths (onsen), great Japanese style breakfast and just a calm relaxing atmosphere. Recommended.

We visited for an evening stay with our daughter and son-in-law. The hotel staff spoke no English but our daughter is fluent and lives and teaches in the area so that was fine. The staff were very courteous and attentive and the grounds were very nice. The room was very comfortable (Japanese style tatami). Both the evening and morning meal were plentiful and tasty. The views from the top floor hot baths and our room were beautiful. A very pleasant stay.
