The Good. Fudoguchikan is situated on a river in the hills east of Kansai airport. It's a beautiful, peaceful setting for a good onsen experience. The Bad. The reception lacked many of the small gestures of hospitality you would expect at a ryokan and was more like a hotel. We were not offered tea. We stood during check-in. We carried our own bags to our room. Nonetheless, the staff were cheerful. The Ugly. A cockroach scurried out of the toilet room when my wife entered. A cockroach also crawled across the wall as we ate dinner. I couldn't tell you if the food was good because I lost my appetite. The staff removed the cockroach, and the management agreed to refund our money for the remainder of our stay. We had to leave because there's never just one cockroach.

Amazing onsen, nice authentic room. Really loved to be there. The staff is polite and helpful. Kaiseki dinner was an amazing experience.

We had a combination of rooms with private onsen and those without which meant one room had western style bed and the others futon. We thoroughly enjoyed the experience of wearing kimonos, the Washoku style of food service and the karaoke. Although at nine pm we were sent to our rooms! A lovely experience but recommend if you have large appetites you order extra food (meat in our case). And perhaps take snacks as breakfast was interesting... Loved the hot springs.
