Atami Onsen Furuya Ryokan

I stayed at a hotel with an open-air bath in my room at Atami. The open-air bath was a bit different from what I had imagined, but it is nice to have a private hot spring with the scent of wood. The dinner we had in our room was gorgeous and delicious.

Atami, Shizuoka Prefecture. In this city where hot springs, sea and emotion resonate, I stayed at Furuya Ryokan, which has been on my mind for a long time, with an anniversary plan. It is a long-established store with a history of 1806 years, and it is an inn with a source that has been protected for more than 200 years and an ever-evolving hospitality. You can feel the "authenticity" in all the stateliness, the quality of the spring, and the atmosphere in the facility, which was perfect for birthday celebrations for friends who accompanied you. The inn is located in the center of the east coast town of Atami City and is approximately a 13-minute walk from JR Atami Station. A taxi will take you there in just a few minutes. Atami Sun Beach, Ginza Shopping Street, dried fish shops and coffee shops are nearby, so you could enjoy walking around the city as well as the hot springs. Furuya Ryokan is a historical inn that has been walking with Atami Onsen since its establishment in the mid-Edo period, but it was comfortable with its beautifully renovated interior and guest rooms. The hot spring draws from the source of one of the seven hot springs of Atami, Seizaemon-yu, which is 100% kakenagashi without adding water, heating, or circulation. The same source is used not only in the public baths and open-air baths, but also in the guest room open-air baths and indoor baths, so you can enjoy "real hot water" anywhere. Gentle to the skin, even steam and fragrance are natural. It is understandable that hot spring fans feel the hot water, and I liked the quality of the water, pH 8.1. All 26 rooms are Japanese-style rooms of 12.5 tatami mats or more, and this time I stayed in a detached building with a Hinoki indoor open-air bath. When you open the window, the sea breeze blows in, and when you close it, it becomes a completely private space. The luxury of monopolizing the source water from the comfort of my room was exceptional, and the time spent quietly soaking in the water was truly extraordinary. Dinner and breakfast are both room meals. It was special to be able to taste kaiseki cuisine alone without worrying about the surroundings. The dishes made with seasonal ingredients from the waters around Izu and Atami were all carefully finished, and each plate had a sense of the season, allowing us to flexibly respond to allergies and ingredients we were not good at. The staff service was wonderful and comfortable. I think the atmosphere of historical sources, quiet time, and the coexistence of tradition and evolution are perfect for anniversary and adult travel.

I was going to give 4 stars(very good) for our one night stay, however due to the Bell desk attitude, I decided to give it an average. I have stayed at many Ryokans in Japan, when you check out and leave, hotel host, bell desk people will all see us off. This hotel is an exceptional, they did not seem to care if we are leaving. I suspect it is because we did not book a taxi with them, instead of called on our own. Nobody came out to help with the luggage and see us off. This is not a typical Japanese service. The man who works outside to direct traffic and answer question seemed to have attitude toward tourist from abroad. This is not acceptable. on the other hand, room service agent was a lovely lady, she served breakfast and dinner in our room, she was very friendly and professional. I cannot say enough good things about her and her service. Food quality was good and expected too. One bad apple ruined our whole experience with this hotel. the bell boy.
