Sublime. Beautiful property, nestled in hills, lovingly maintained. Superb cuisine, both Japanese and French, both breakfast and dinner. Outdoor onsen is excellent (indoor public onsen was closed but didn't matter). Having a private bath in our villa was a wonderful way to start and finish the day. Super easy access from Tokyo, 2 hrs if you combine Shinkansen with a local train from Atami to Izu Kogen. The hotel provides a free shuttle from the station and back. Only 5 mins. Nearby Mount Omuro is an excellent spot to enjoy sweeping views of the Izu peninsula, sparkling blue sea and if you're lucky like we were a stunning view of Mount Fuji. Just hop on the ski lift and walk the rim of the perfect crater. Recommend highly!

We stayed here mid March with friends for one night in two adjoining private villas with open-air bath. The experience was amazing. For sure one of the best ryokan we ever stayed at! The villa was spacious, immaculately clean and the outside terrace with private open-air bath was amazing. Bathroom-amenities were high quality and the provided yakata gave an extra touch to it all. An added bonus was our dinner at the onsite French restaurant. The chefs capabilities completely blew us away. The flavours, the presentation and the overall friendliness were a treat. Like we told the chef: the French only wish they could cook like this. In our opinion, this is a six star hotel.

It may be old and the price is high, but the detached building is quite spacious and you can stay comfortably. The only disappointing thing is that the amenities do not include skin care products. I thought they were there until last year, so I asked the front desk, and they said, "They're in the large bath." The room has an open-air bath, so you have to take a bath in your room and then go to the large bath to apply lotion.... Unbelievable. This is the first time I've seen a hotel in this price class that does not provide skin care products. I would have liked some skin care products, even if they weren't individually packaged, at least in bottles.
