Dormy Inn EXPRESS Asakusa

After 20 or 30 trips to Tokyo I finally stayed at this hotel. Nice location by the river. I looked out my window and there it was in front of me. That said, I didn't plan to spend my time in Tokyo sitting in my room looking out at the nearby river, so actully it didn't matter. Subway entrances to Station 19 of the Ginza (orange) line a block or two away, but they don't facilitate use by handicapped people or people with large heavy luggage. No elevators or escalators. Expect a workout climbing lots of stairs. The rooms are slightly Japanese style with a small tatami, taking your shoes off before entering. Not 21st Century modern. The bathroom is very compact, like in Toyoko Inn. The breakfast is adequate but not wonderful. Limited choices, limited seating, usually near full to capacity. Reception was helpful by loaning me a scale to see if my suitcase was overweight. I booked my room because Agoda said the hotel has massages. That definitely is NOT true. It is just a hot spring in a hotel, and the hours are very sexist. Women have several hours a day on weekdays, and men have all the rest of the time. I won't stay there again even though the hotel is okay because I don't support blatant sexism, or any kind of sexism. FWIW, I was the only non-Asian I saw at the hotel. All in all, the hotel is adequate but I've had better in Tokyo for a similar price so there is no reason to stay there again.

We stayed at the Dormy Inn, Asakusa for 5 nights as part of a short visit to Tokyo. We chose this hotel because it was close to Asakusa Station (with a direct connection to Tokyo Haneda Airport), had good reviews, and had facilities that included a fridge and microwave in the room, and a laundry room. We managed to get a good deal for a room with a view of the Tokyo Skytree and the River Sumida. The hotel certainly met all our expectations and more. Although the room was on the small side, it was comfortable. The breakfast was fine, with a Japanese flavour as is to be expected (quite a few fish dishes) but enough options for a western-oriented vegetarian diet. The on-sen was good (and well used by us) but note the separate male and female times. The “extras” (drinking yoghurt, ice-cream, coffee at certain times) and the evening ramen (assumed not vegetarian) were much appreciated. And, of course, everyone was very polite and helpful and the hotel was very clean.

I stayed for four nights at this hotel while visiting Tokyo and in particular the Asakusa area. The hotel was a few minutes walk from the nearest train station, and from the. Sensoji Temple and surrounding shopping and dining areas. The cost of the room was very reasonable and the location was perfect. As with most Japanese hotel rooms, they are very small compared to western hotels but managed to do the job. The staff was very helpful with check-in and checkout was speedy. I did eat the breakfast buffet once at the hotel despite having a willing pallet, the selection for an average westerner was fairly slim. There are countless restaurants within a few minutes, walk of the hotel. The bed was extremely hard. I have no problem with the hard mattress, but it felt like it was a thin layer of padding on top of plywood. The pillows were very much like thin sandbags. Made for a very difficult night sleep.
