Eco Tree Hotel

Disappointing and misleading experience at Eco Tree Hotel Malacca (booked via Traveloka for 2 nights). ​Major facilities are not operational: Milan Italian Restaurant is CLOSED, Poolside Bar is CLOSED, and the swimming pool is in terrible condition. None of this was mentioned on Traveloka or their official website, which feels like hiding facts to sell rooms. ​Cleanliness is average (3.5/5). Room TV only has basic local channels with no YouTube or internet access. Management must update true information online.

I rarely write reviews, but I feel compelled to share my experience so that others can avoid facing the same inconvenience I did. I made a booking for this property through Agoda on 8 November around 1:00 AM, intending to check in immediately after confirming the reservation. Nowhere on the listing did it mention that the hotel was fully booked for that night or that check-in would only be possible the next day at 3:00 PM. If such information had been clearly stated, I would never have proceeded with the booking, as I urgently needed a place to stay that night. Right after confirming my reservation, I contacted the property to arrange check-in, only to be told that all rooms were occupied and that I could not check in at all. This was incredibly frustrating I had paid for a booking I couldn’t even use. I was left stranded in the middle of the night without accommodation, despite the fact that the booking went through successfully. To make matters worse, when I reached out for assistance and clarification, the response I received from the management was unhelpful and inflexible. Instead of understanding the situation and offering a solution or refund, they simply referred to standard policies and did not acknowledge the property’s misleading availability information on Agoda. This experience shows a serious lack of transparency and responsibility from the property. It’s unacceptable for a listing to allow bookings when rooms are actually unavailable and even more disappointing when the management refuses to handle such cases fairly. I strongly urge future guests to double-check availability directly with the hotel before booking, as the online information may not be accurate. I also hope the management takes this feedback seriously, improves their communication with booking platforms, and learns to handle guest issues with more professionalism and empathy. Overall, this was an extremely unpleasant experience, and I do not recommend this property to anyone who values honesty, clarity, and good customer service.

I was mostly happy with my stay at the Eco Tree Hotel despite the fact that it is now beginning to suffer from wear and tear; (stained fabrics, fraying towels, worn/patched carpets, worn/badly repaired furnishings). Nothing terrible but disappointing nonetheless. They had no cable channels only 4 local TV programmes. The shower pressure was good and the water temperature fine. The pool was clean and there were a few loungers, but clients were told to use one of the room towels as pool towels were no longer provided. A clean towel could be requested. WiFi was average and suffered some dropouts and buffering. Reception said it could be very poor when the hotel had many guests (Worst I experienced was 10meg down & 3 upload). The location was about a 20min walk from the 'attractions' like Jonker Walk etc. and there were plenty or places to eat and drink close by (Nyonya Atlantic restaurant across the street is very good). Plenty of choice for Asian breakfasts but cereals, toast and jam for the European palate. The restaurant staff were very pleasant and did your fried eggs to order....a fresh toasted egg sandwich to start the day! At check-in I was asked to pay tourist tax (Heritage tax shown on Agoda booking) but later discovered they had also added the State Tax of 60MYR. I asked for this to be refunded to my CC but was told the payment had already been 'audited' and would be refunded 'within 15 days'. As refunds to credit cards are usually done on the payment device I found this strange. Furthermore only the credit card payment slip was available but no itemised bill. A hotel dealing with bookings from Agoda and similar agencies should know that these taxes are usually included online. I have to wonder if this is common practice at Eco Tree and whether others clients have also been double charged the state tax, especially as I was later told that I should have informed them the tax was paid in my reservation!! Altogether an adequate hotel that I would recommend at the right price.  Incidentally in the days before I checked out they had started stripping the wallpaper in the entrance foyer and  painting....So maybe improvements are on the way?
