We had just finished a week at the Shangri-La Rasa Ria in Kota Kinabalu, so coming here felt like a bit of a letdown. To be fair, had I not just come from a classic 5-star resort, I probably would have been more enthusiastic. The Honest Truth: • Sleep quality was comfortable. • Staff are friendly enough. • Accommodations are okay—nothing more, nothing less. • Pool was okay. Weight room was okay. Buffet was just barely okay. So all in all? The place is okay. Prices are relatively okay too. This is apparently the most expensive and nicest hotel in Sandakan according to my extensive searches, so I guess this is the place to be. Let's face it—you'll likely be here for a night before heading off to the river or Sepilok anyway. If you just need a place to rest your head, it's great. If you're looking for a resort experience, head to KK. The Bright Spots: • Couples massage promotion – highly recommend! The masseuses were very nice and top professionals. Well worth it. • The hotel has history, which adds some charm. The Reality Check: Unfortunately, the hotel shows its age. It's well past its prime and could really use a renovation. The colonial charm is there, but the wear and tear are evident. Bottom line: A functional, comfortable stopover for your Sandakan adventures. Just don't expect luxury.

Sabah hotel was very good for our one night stop over from Sepikok. The only thing that let it down was despite a non smoking room it smelt strongly of cigarettes. With no other rooms available we had to make do but it would have been a make or break if we were staying longer. The interconnecting family room was really helpful - luckily the children’s bedroom smelt fine. Having said that it was a fantastic pool, friendly staff and could cater for a peanut allergy which was useful.

We stayed for 2 nights and we were pleasantly surprised by how great the hotel was. We were in a large air conditioned room which was very comfortable. The hotel itself is large with 2 different restaurants to eat in and a cafe for snacks. All the staff were very friendly and the place was clean and comfortable.
