We had a great stay at Hotel La Casona de Don Lucas and would happily recommend it to others visiting Guanajuato.
The location is perfect for exploring, right in the heart of the city and within easy walking distance to major sights, restaurants, and the lively plazas. It made getting around incredibly convenient and added to the overall experience.
Our room was spacious and well laid out, with a king bed downstairs and two full-size beds upstairs, perfect for spreading out and relaxing. The room was clean, but some of the furniture was showing some wear. One of the highlights was the balcony overlooking the main street, with beautiful views of the basilica. We really enjoyed spending time out there, taking in the atmosphere and watching the city go by.
Breakfast was included and offered a nice variety each morning, including cereals, breads, juices, chilaquiles, eggs, beans, and more. It was a great way to start the day before heading out to explore.
The staff were consistently friendly and helpful throughout our stay. They also assisted us in arranging a tour of the city’s highlights, which made exploring Guanajuato easy and enjoyable.
Because the hotel is right on a lively street, there is some noise at night—but for us, it added to the charm and festive energy of the area and didn’t bother us at all. That said, light sleepers may want to keep this in mind.
The hotel itself is a historic building, which adds a lot of character. There are no elevators, which wasn’t an issue for us, but it could be something to consider for guests with mobility concerns.
The only issue during our stay was a group of students who were extremely loud in the dining area around midnight to 1:00am, and unfortunately, staff did not intervene. This was more disruptive than the street noise. But also relatively minor issue.
The only small improvement we’d suggest would be adding a mini fridge in the rooms for convenience.
Overall, we really enjoyed our stay—the location, views, and welcoming staff made it a pleasant experience. This was certainly a solid choice and a good value for our money.

We had a balcony room looking over the square to the right. Great people-watching. Can be noisy at night but there are heavy wood doors that can be covered over the balcony doors and they block out almost all sounds. Note that balcony rooms are up 25 steps - no hotel elevator.
Breakfast was included and ok. Some different options each day (we stayed four nights). It’s kind of a buffet - staff dishes up your food.
We are retired so we were not dependent on the WiFi, but it’s terrible in our room, in the upper courtyard, and in the breakfast room. Very slow. Drops out all the time. Looks like it automatically reconnects on your iPhone when you return to the hotel but it isn’t. You have to turn off your WiFi then turn it back on in order to reestsblish service. They really need to address this.
Location is great. Right by the church and a 5 minute walk to many attractions. Some very good restaurants. Nice and helpful staff. Would stay here again.

We enjoyed our stay while visiting beautiful Guanajuato. We were in room #1 which overlooks the dining area & lobby. It was surprisingly quiet. We had 2 queen beds, lots of storage, a safe. Also a large living area with a kitchenette, including a microwave, sink & fridge. The front desk was helpful. Rita (hope I got her name right) the day front desk person was always helpful. She arranged a private tour with an amazing guide & his son. What a fabulous tour. The evening staff (Monica) helped us with restaurant suggestions on our first evening. She failed to mention that Pimenta Rose offers a 10% discount to hotel guests. The would have been a $200 peso saving. Breakfast is included with your stay. It’s a buffet of mostly Mexican fare. Very good. If more spice is needed there’s lots of salsas to choose from. The wait staff offered generous servings of coffee.
