I stayed at Xinalani for 1 week with my wife as a part of a yoga retreat group with 20 Canadian travelers. We booked the trip almost 1 year in advance so had tons of time to read all about the resort and looked forward to it every month leading up to it.
The resort itself is just simply picturesque, and each morning we were greeted with deep blue ocean, a lush and vibrant jungle surrounding us, and so many colorful creatures around. Depending on the time of the year, I would highly recommend opting for one of the room options with AC, especially if you tend to need some escape from the hotter, humid climate. We stayed in one of the beachside casitas, and it was worth every bit of the additional price, as you get your own private soak tub (great to relax in once the main pool is closed at night), a spacious outdoor shower, a hammock right inside your room, and a balcony with seating area.
The yoga facilities were simply amazing, my faves being the greenhouse studio for the sunset views in the early evening, and jungle studio for morning classes before it got hotter. We also had an opportunity to do more gentle meditation sessions oceanside as well. The mats and props were all very good quality, and the studio space was kept very clean by the staff, despite most of them being in open air (albeit covered). The stairs to get to the studios might seem daunting at first but once you get to know all the paths it's really not that bad, and the gorgeous views and plants mean you basically get a free scenic mini hike in every day!
The food was certainly a highlight. As you might expect at a purpose built yoga retreat resort, the food was plentiful but always focused on clean, whole foods, with plenty of fruit and vegetable options, and at dinner time there was always an option of chicken or local seafood. Pan seared pargo (snapper) was one of my faves! Also, for the early risers, there is always coffee, tea, fruit and yogurt at 7am so don't feel like you have to wait until 10am to have your breakfast!
The staff were truly amazing, and while staying at Xinalani, definitely take advantage of the various excursion opportunities to go see the dolphins, hike to a waterfall, visit the local fishing villages like Yelapa, or take part in the temazcal or cacao ceremony. Kimmi was one of the lead guides for these excursions and his knowledge of the area and vibrant energy made these trips so memorable.
Whether you're considering a yoga retreat for the first time, or you've been to a few others, I absolutely recommend choosing Xinalani as your next destination.
