Dar al Bahar

A superb address in Essaouira. The ocean view from the dar is incredible, and the location is perfect in the medina. Very good welcome as well. I recommend the ASSIA room on the ground floor with twin beds; it does not have a direct sea view from the window BUT has a private terrace overlooking the ocean that is extraordinary, where one can admire the sunset with the privilege of being on an exclusive terrace adjacent to the room (accessible via a small staircase in the room and then a second one to a first terrace [also private]). SEE PHOTOS. Truly a favorite for this city, this establishment, and this room-terrace. I was supposed to return in June; unfortunately, I had to cancel for family reasons, but I hope to be able to return quickly. I highly recommend it.

The location is amazing, the riad looks gorgeous, the breakfast looks scrummy, …… but sadly I cancelled my booking before I got to experience it. I was excited about returning to Essaouira and staying at this Riad, especially because of the views from the Malika top floor room. I saw on their website that it said to get the best rates, to book direct. The rate advertised for the Malaka room was 55 Euro, so I made the online request. The response was that the room was 72 Euro per night. I asked them to honour the advertised price, sending a screen shot of their website, and they agreed they would, so I paid the deposit. I then confirmed what the remaining balance would be to be paid on arrival, and they reverted to insisting it was 72 Euro per night. This made it more expensive than going through Booking.com. They wouldn’t budge, and blamed the fact that their website prices hadn’t been update for a few years. I cancelled the reservation, and had to wait weeks for a refund. The whole experience left me feeling that the staff were not trustworthy, and I wouldn’t have felt comfortable staying there. I noticed that they had update the website, and the price was 60 Euro per night for the Malika room, so it definitely felt like they were trying to rip me off. Be warned!! I have found another place to stay, with even more amazing views over the rampart of the city, and of the sea, on Airbnb, and have rekindled the excitement of going back to this amazing city.
