A-Train Hotel

We were late arriving at the hotel because of train delays, but thanks to their 24hr reception we were quickly settled into our room- on the top floor via a lift. Our room was perfectly cool thanks to efficient aircon. The decor is plain and the room was spotlessly clean. I was slightly concerned that the mattress was very soft, but actually it was very comfortable to sleep in and the bedlinen is great quality too. The breakfast buffet was great too; everything you need to set yourself up for the day. The absolute advantage of this being a privately run hotel is the quality of service. We were welcome to pop back any time during the day for a rest, to avail ourselves of the free tea and coffee at any time. Even in the day that we checked out, the owners made their luggage store available all day with a very efficient system, and moreover we were welcome to continue to hang out in the lounge diner and drink free coffee and tea and use the (beautifully clean) loo. Our room was at the back of the A side of the hotel and it was perfectly quiet. I was very surprised - pleasantly so.

We stayed in a 3 person room for one night. Located near station, which was perfect for us. Not too far from city centre, shops, restaurants and canals. Room was clean, quiet and had air conditioning. Staff were friendly. Good continental breakfast in a quirky, informal seating area. We were able to leave our luggage there after checkout and the staff kindly asked us if we’d like complimentary coffee/tea and a sit down when we returned to collect them. I’d happily stay here again if we ever return to Amsterdam.

Spacious family rooms, all day coffee was such a help, breakfast readily available so our group of 9 (stayed in two largest rooms) could stumble down at our leisure, affordable stay in a historic building, feels like the intimate family run Euro hotels I stayed in during my backpacking days, so many of the staff have been there over 10 years and are happy talk. Note about leaving keys at the front desk when going out: this is a hotel on a busy street with lots of people trying to take advantage of you. They do a great job of policing the front door and preventing entry of unauthorized people. Most hotels in Europe register each guest and don’t allow anyone else to come in. I appreciate that. Consequently very quiet and peaceful. I’m definitely staying here on my next trip to AMS. Photos of historic building poster from the hallways that I looked at daily.
