I recently stayed here while travelling for business, I did enjoy my evening meal, my steak was cooked as I order and the staff were pleasant, unfortunately that was my only highlight of my stay. I retired to my room to watch some TV that hanging on a bracket that looked like it was about to fall off the wall, when flicking through the channels I found some channels weren’t available due to the TV being out of date, I resorted to watching TV on my phone, but as the WIFI was poor it kept on cutting out. Next morning I went to have a shower, to find the shower head leaking making water pressure very low, to add a had to run the shower for 5 minutes just to get it lukewarm… not a good start of the day so far, so I went to get breakfast to be told it’s a buffet breakfast, so I was keen to get on with day I agreed to this, to my disappointment everything was cold or barely warm, when I brought this up with one of the staff members she argued it wasn’t cold!! I though this was extremely unprofessional, and how this person is employed in hospitality I don’t know, I said I would be prepared to pay half the cost, but again she argued with me and I would have to take it up with the manager, it this stage I was very angry, I did take it up with the manager and told him of my other concerns, he did say he wouldn’t charge me for the breakfast. My concern is we all pay a reasonable amount of money when we stay in such accommodation and we should expect a reasonable standard of service and amenities, and feeling we are being ripped off, hopefully Hotel Nelson will take note

Some motels in NZ are really hotels, but some hotels are rather motels. That's exactly the case with The Hotel Nelson. It seems it's a bus tour hotel. The lobby was nice but that was the last good thing there. The room was small, dark, and they put the beds across each other which was absolutely weird as we had to navigate between them to get to the door. The bathroom was half-renovated with a jet shower (the jets did not perform due to poor water pressure), old toilet, sink and faucets, and old scratched doors. The location is a few km from the city center, some 5-10 minutes by car. Ample parking.

Sadly I would not recommend booking with the Hotel Nelson in spite of the good location and spacious rooms (the walls are a little thin but that was tolerable). The reason for this is that hotel staff got details of our booking wrong, then refused to acknowledge their mistake, leading to us having to pay 3x(!) the original quoted price of the room. We made a booking by phone for early January, explaining we’d be coming back from a hike. They made the booking for December and charged us a no-show fee (no phone call to confirm we were coming…) then when I called to explain the error they said they understood and would transfer our booking to the correct date. What they didn’t mention is that they rebooked us in at the highest possible rate — over $200 a night, twice what I was quoted over the phone. Very convenient mistake on their part if you ask me! I tried to call to explain the error but nobody refused to admit fault. The rooms are OK, maybe 3 stars, but certainly not the $300+/night rate we ended up having to pay. Terrible value, we were very disappointed.
