Base Bay of Islands

Watch out for possible Corona Virus in this place! We booked a double room that has shared Kitchen/bathroom with 2 other rooms. In the other room was a couple that was coughing their lungs the whole day and night. The walls are so thin (there are even big dents/holes in the walls) that our custom earplugs didn't help at all. The room was next to the bathroom and their room, so we could hear the coughs with occasional vomit sounds as if it were in our room from the moment we arrived until the early morning so we ended up with only 1 hour of sleep. Upon notifying the hostel about this the next morning, they didn't do anything. We checked out the same morning as we didn't want to risk our health any longer and have another sleepless night on top. We requested a refund for the 2 nights we booked as these were not acceptable conditions. They said only the manager can deal with that so we had to wait until the next morning. Upon returning the next morning we saw they already rented out the room, and thus double booking the room not to mention putting other people at risk. The manager rudely tells us they will not refund anything as it is not their problem nor responsibility that guests in their hostel are sick and putting others at risk and giving guests the worst night sleep due to their crappy thin walls (by the way the mattress is like a jumping castle and the kitchen doesn't have a cooker so you still have to use the other kitchen if you want to cook). He starts denying after a while they were even sick calling us liars just so they don't have to take responsibility and it's ok for them to get more money out of the room. They clearly don't care for the comfort and health of their guest at this place so if you want to stay somewhere you can find many better places on Airbnb!!

We had a double room with shared kitchen/bathroom booked. The room is tiny, the bed was very wobbly so each move you both feel - the walls were super thin - we had a neighbor that coughed all night long like he had pneumonia so so bad and disgusting that we didn't sleep on hour all nigh as well as were scared to get seriously ill as one of pneumonia or Coronavirus symptoms is a very bad dry cough which it was and the guy was suffering big time. His gf was coughing a bit too meaning it was spreading - hotel did nothing about it, they didn't care and also didn't want to let others know there might be a big danger for their health neither sanitised the place - we left after that night immediately covering our faces to evacuate that room we asked for a refund for our stay and the night we paid but left and they were very unfriendly and didn't accomodate us to different room neither offered refund for such a terrible experience and we saw they rented our room immediately to someone else getting double.profit on that night. The only thing they repeated is there is nothing wrong with sleepless nights as it's a hostel ( private room not shared room ) and wasn't even that cheap - we found airbnbs around the area which were def a better option so avoid this place by all means. Also be careful for possibility of getting sick especially travelling in the next days as they could have infected people working there as well. This happened 08/03/2020. I am saying that as we would appreciate knowing this before we going on holidays and then not stress that we might get into serious health issues rather than enjoy our time and get no sleep.

Was a pretty good place to stay on a budget. Clean room and kitchen area. However we got a double room and were provided with two single beds pushed together which was really uncomfortable and annoying because they would keep sliding apart. The bar is pretty late into the night which is fine if youre okay with that
