Stewart Island Lodge

Wonderful location above the bay with a "view to die for". We were met at the ferry and brought to the lodge with a real warm and friendly welcome. Given the tour of the place showing us the communal kitchen, lounge, laundry and dining areas and then taken to our room. Everything was first class, clean, good quality, spacious - and access straight out onto the balcony/terrace which all rooms share, but still you have your own space. And again - from pretty much everywhere there is that view - I know I repeat it, but it bears repetition. The hosts could not have been more attentive - everything and anything they could do to make our stay as comfortable as possible, including info on the local town/village, stores, bars, activities, etc. and a wealth of knowledge about surrounding islands, areas, wildlife, etc. Cannot praise this place highly enough -- just be aware that it is at the top of a very steep hill - most things are in Stewart Island, but the hill is steep but not too long. Well worth the climb for the accommodation and the views. Please note, we had Mary & Gordon (Gordy) standing in as hosts for their friends (the owners). Special praise for them, but we have no doubt that the owners give equally high service.

My wife and I can’t talk highly enough about our stay at the Stewart Island Lodge and highly recommend Oban as, a destination to visit for any adventurous travellers planning on a South Island trip. Our magnificent hosts Cindy and Hilton were extremely helpful in suggesting activities to get the most out of our time on the island and made our stay at the lodge feel like a home away from home. From picking us up at the Ferry, to introducing us to locals and helping us organise hiking, diving + fishing trips Cindy and Hilton really helped make our 3 days on the island extremely special. The room we stayed in at the lodge afforded a spectacular view of halfmoon bay which was a lovely picture to wake up to each morning. Additionally, there was ample space in the room for luggage with heating in the main area and bathrooms making our stay nice and cozy. I’d highly recommend staying here for anyone who loves adventuring, hiking, fishing, diving and taking in the beautiful scenery the island has to offer. We’ll definitely be back to the lodge anytime we’re in NZ

Stewart Island is such an amazing destination and Stewart Island Lodge is the place to stay when visiting! My wife and I enjoyed our stay very much. Cindy and Hilton are the loveliest hosts, we are grateful for them to share this special part of the world with us. They were very helpful from picking us up from the ferry to giving the best advice for what to see and do on the island. Stewart Island Lodge is a beautiful accommodation, with a large bedroom with the most amazing view to wake up to each morning. Large walk in wardrobe and bathroom with a large shower & relaxing bath. Lovely large common space for dining and relaxing, as well as a full service kitchen available for guest use. We will definitely be back!
