From the name and the price I was expecting something a bit more luxurious. Having said this, the B&B is located in one of New Zealand’s prime tourist sites, offers a reasonable standard of accommodation, albeit with a slightly dowdy or tumbledown feel, and the staff/owners were friendly and helpful. I was roomed in a private cabin, with rather poor insulation, such that I had to keep the heater on all night to feel comfortable. The bathroom was small, with rather limited shelf space, and the wash-hand basin was ridiculously tiny, with the mixer tap hemmed in by the liquid soap dispenser. There was however a good shower cubicle and nicely hot water. Continental breakfast was rather basic: cereals, some fresh fruit, toasting bread and a selection of jams and spreads. Car parking space was at the bottom of the slope, but the staff advised to drive up the driveway to deposit bags if preferred. NOTE - the current picture shows the entrance to the caves tour, not the B&B.

This small boutique lodge is absolutely wonderful and the hosts are very welcoming. It was one of the hotels we booked ahead of times because we had booked morning visits to Waitomo Caves and Ruakuri Cave (very easy to get to them from here) then also went on our own later investigations of the Ruakuri bush walk and the Marakopa Falls about 30 mins away. We didn't get to see the Aranui Cave nor did we do the more adventurous black water rafting and caving. If you want to be very extensive then two nights here would be good. It was booked out when we arrived so I am glad I booked ahead. Also, a number of people for our cave tours were late because they had mistimed their travel (not us though!). Be aware that the lodge is on a hill. You are able to drive up to deliver your luggage and passengers and then park in the street parking below (or just unpack what is needed as per travel in England!). Walking from there to lodge does rely on stairs. I still think the location is wonderful! The room was quiet, clean and spacious, bedding comfortable with a good bathroom. Charging spots are near the bed. The fridge, coffee, etc making, wine glasses in room were appreciated. We had a deck from which we could just walk across to the breakfast and dinner area. It also had chairs and table so we could enjoy the evening and the morning. In the end, we didn't leave between our arrival and departure. Lots of nice touches with the décor made it very special - little ornaments, wagtail placemats, etc. The lodge includes breakfast in a dining areas and we had a chance to catch up with other guests. Dinner is more intimate and we had it here as well (booked on the day we arrived around 5pm) so caught up with other travellers earlier (we asked if we could join their table). The lodge gave us the menu for the night, we said yes, and we had lovely food at a quite reasonable rate. Additionally, I had left my kindle at a previous hotel who forwarded it to the lodge. Again, our hosts were wonderful. Both the previous hotel and this one were very helpful. Our host was very exact in saying who it should be addressed to because NZ postal service to rural areas can be problematical. It was waiting for me when I arrived. Thank you very much!

The owners and staff running this lodge are lovely people. The place is a bit unusual and does have some nice features. The room was very clean, with some nice deco features. However, the bed was so soft and probably warn out that I did not sleep for two days. The bathroom was tired and actually the lock on the bathroom door was held back was tape because it was faulty, so you could not close the bathroom door! This place billed as suits this is misleading. There is one small sheared microwave in a dirty lean to for quests to use. You have to ask for a dish from the reception. There is a large dinning room which is used for breakfast , it has books and games in it but oddly guests do not seem to be allowed to use this room other than at breakfast. Reception closes at 8 pm and you are not allowed to use the washer or it would seem use the microwave after 8. Breakfast is provided and is poor, tinned fruit and sliced bread for toast. No fresh food , no cooked food, even an egg. Jam is provided. The way to the rooms is up on even paths. There are only two places to eat near by and both offered mainly burgers. We were offered only one middle sized and one small hand towel each and because of the climate these did not dry after one use. The rooms are not serviced when you stay more then one night, meaning no cleaning cups and no new tea bags! Although the family running this lodge are lovely people I feel that this place is run to fit in with their own needs and not the guests. we were talking to another couple whose rooms was worst then ours and they like us were questioning why our very good travel agent had sent us to this place. I would not recommend staying more then one night in this area anyway.
