Pousada Viana do Castelo

This hotel has a privileged position at the top of a hill overlooking the Lima Estuary and coastline. Easily reachable from town by the inclined railway or a 15 min drive up the hill. It was built at the turn of the last century ( sadly obliterating a chunk of Castro era hill fort) and the grand scale of rooms and hallways are a throwback to another era. Rooms were good value and breakfast was included. Staff was sparse but unfailingly helpful. Good internet, spacious rooms, quiet surrounding all made for a delightful stay. Only thing that would have been nice to have was a kettle in the room. Maintenance does what it can but some evidence of damp in the walls here and there. Upkeep of such a building can’t be easy. Lovely starched sheets - a real Luxury these days.

From the entrance to the guest house, check-in, bar, breakfast and facilities with a superb view, I reinforce the unrivalled professionalism of the hotel staff. Of a rare sympathy and delicacy.

This is a fantastic place to stay. A beautiful setting, the views are stunning. Had room 207. Simple room, spotlessly clean. Ate in the restaurant. Great choice of very well cooked food. The staff were lovely. So helpful and friendly. This is just a brilliant hotel.
